Science studies scholars often study up to high-tech elites who produce and design scientific knowledge and technology. Context holds a significant place mediating the conceptual and the empirical in ethnography. Science and technology studies is famous for questioning conceptual and material boundaries by following controversies that cut across them. However, it has recently been argued that in research involving online platforms, there are also more practical boundaries to negotiate that are created by the variable availability, visibility, and structuring of data. Modern health care is inextricably bound up with technologically mediated knowledge and practice. In science studies the laboratory has been positioned as a privileged place for understanding scientific practice. Recently there have been pleas for STS to make a difference in how science policies are constructed and enacted. Much less remarked upon is the possibility that there may be troubling alignments between science studies and research policies in the form of shared conceptual, epistemological and methodological assumptions.
