  1. Peircean Semiotic Indeterminacy and Its Relevance for Biosemiotics.Robert Lane - 2014 - In Vinicius Romanini (ed.), Peirce and Biosemiotics: A Guess at the Riddle of Life. Dordrecht: Springer Verlag.
This chapter presents a detailed explanation of Peirce’s early and late views on semiotic indeterminacy and then considers how those views might be applied within biosemiotics. Peirce distinguished two different forms of semiotic indeterminacy: generality and vagueness. He defined each in terms of the “right” that indeterminate signs extend, either to their interpreters in the case of generality or to their utterers in the case of vagueness, to further determine their meaning. On Peirce’s view, no sign is absolutely determinate, i.e., (...)

  • Peirce on the passions: The role of instinct, emotion, and sentiment in inquiry and action.Robert J. Beeson - unknown
One of the least explored areas of C.S. Peirce's wide range of work is his contributions to psychology and the philosophy of mind. This dissertation examines the corpus of this work, especially as it relates to the subjects of mind, habit, instinct, sentiment, emotion, perception, consciousness, cognition, and community. The argument is that Peirce's contributions to these areas of investigation were both highly original and heavily influenced by the main intellectual currents of his time. An effort has been made to (...)

  • How to get it. diagrammatic reasoning as a tool of knowledge development and its pragmatic dimension.Michael H. G. Hoffmann - 2004 - Foundations of Science 9 (3):285-305.
Discussions concerning belief revision, theorydevelopment, and ``creativity'' in philosophy andAI, reveal a growing interest in Peirce'sconcept of abduction. Peirce introducedabduction in an attempt to providetheoretical dignity and clarification to thedifficult problem of knowledge generation. Hewrote that ``An Abduction is Originary inrespect to being the only kind of argumentwhich starts a new idea'' (Peirce, CP 2.26).These discussions, however, led to considerabledebates about the precise way in which Peirce'sabduction can be used to explain knowledgegeneration (cf. Magnani, 1999; Hoffmann, 1999).The crucial question is (...)

  • Visualizando Signos.Priscila Farias & Joao Queiroz - 2017 - Sao Paulo: Blucher.
