This paper argues that Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutical philosophy attempts to reopen the question of human transcendence in contemporary terms. While his conception of language as self-transcending is deeply Husserlian, Ricoeur also responds to the analytical challenge when he deploys a basic distinction in Fregean logic in order to clarify Heidegger’s phenomenology of world. Ricoeur’s commitment to a transcendental view is evident in his conception of narrative, which enables him to emphasize the role of the performative in literary reading. The meaning (...) of the self in time provides Ricoeur with a discursive basis for distinguishing his own position from that of Kant and other philosophers in the transcendental tradition. (shrink)

Les idées philosophiques de Łukasiewicz sont peu connues. Pourtant, elles sont essentielles pour comprendre l’évolution interne et l’unité particulière de l’École de Lvov-Varsovie. Dans l’article, nous montrons comment, dans le contexte de la critique du psychologisme, le jeune Łukasiewicz se détourne, au nom d’Aristote, de la tradition brentanienne et plus généralement germanique (Husserl, Meinong). Nous montrons également l’impact exercé par son évolution sur les léopoliens. La théorie des actions et des produits (TAP) que Twardowski formule à l’époque, et qui affirme (...) l’autonomie des notions abstraites stabilisées à l’aide de l’écriture et produites dans des actions psychophysiques, constituera dorénavant la base épistémologique commune de ses disciples. Evidence is the very core of Husserlian phenomenology, with the term “evidence” signifying for Husserl the phenomenological perspective on the question of truth. In contrast to the conventional philosophical understanding of “truth” in mainly epistemological terms, Husserl’s notion of “evidence”, as elaborated in his Logical Investigations (1900–1), is more essentially ontological, pointing to the way in which a phenomenon becomes clear to us in its constitution. Husserl’s main point in the Sixth Investigation was that we can “see” how evidence functions (...) when we compare something in the fullness of its presence with the emptiness of its absence. This paper considers the example Husserl offers of the room where the lights go off in order to illuminate the breakthrough for phenomenology achieved by Logical Investigations in its move beyond logic and epistemology to the primary level of pretheoretical experience as the reality of the real. RESUMO O artigo tem por objetivo analisar a mudança no regime do signo que ocorreu na filosofia de Husserl entre os anos de 1890 e 1901. Para tanto, partimos da reconstrução da teoria do simbolismo apresentada em Sobre a Lógica dos Signos, de 1890, e analisamos a recepção de algumas de suas teses centrais em Investigações Lógicas, de 1901. Querse, com isso, sublinhar a relevância histórica deste pequeno tratado de 1890 para a fenomenologia madura de Husserl. Ver-se-á, específicamente, que a (...) crítica ao princípio da economia do pensar apresentada em Prolegômenos à Lógica Pura é o prolongamento de uma tese de 1890 e que o conceito de intenção simbólica vazia de 1901 é a resposta de Husserl aos impasses de sua primeira teoria do signo enquanto substituto. Conclui-se, por fim, mostrando como essa mudança no regime do signo é condição de possibilidade para a análise correlativa característica de Investigações Lógicas. ABSTRACT The article aims to analyze the changes in the regime of sign that occurred in Husserl’s philosophy between the years of1890 and 1901. To do so, we start with the reconstruction of the theory of symbolism presented in On the Logic of Signs, from 1890, and analyze the reception of some of its central theses in the Logical Investigations, from 1901. It is intended to emphasize the historical relevance of this small treatise of 1890 for Husserl’s mature phenomenology. It will be seen specifically that the critique of the principle of the economy of thought presented in Prolegomena to Pure Logic is the extension of a thesis from 1890 and that the concept of symbolic empty-intention from 1901 is Husserl’s answer to the impasses of his first theory of the sign as a substitute. We conclude, in the end, by showing how this change in the regime of sign is condition ofpossibility for the correlative analysis characteristic of the Logical Investigations. (shrink)

The author deals with philosophical ethos in its practical function. After the First World War Husserl not only considers the structure but also the function of phenomenology. A meditation on this function, with regard to the history of philosophy, is his primal task in the Freiburg years. Thus the possibility of developing a rigorous phenomenology of practical reason becomes the basis of phenomenology. The importance of Husserl’s characterization of life in terms of striving is stressed as a key motive in (...) the turn from static to genetic phenomenology. It is argued that instinctive life is inserted in a cultural development that shapes a theoretical side providing content to our primal tendencies as well as the identity of individuals. A decisive point in genetic phenomenology is the passage from instinctive animality to human life. This development rests on a pretheoretic affectivity that colors life as a sort of subconsciousness underlying all our activities. It is the originary stratum through which we approach the world. The article goes on to high-light the importance of Husserl’s concept of culture and specifically of his practical concept of culture which is made up of life-regulations and without which an ideal and a technical culture are devoid of a ground. Finally, the author considers life-regulations as a key problem to be dealt with by phenomenology first in the emotional and then in the practical level. (shrink)

The systematic importance of the eidetic account of phantasy for Husserlian phenomenology in general is undisputed, but whether this account can be relevant for Aesthetics has often been put into question. In this paper I argue that Husserl’s rich phenomenology of phantasy, and in particular his account of perceptual phantasy, can nevertheless significantly enhance our understanding of how we recognize and imaginatively participate in artistic fictions. Moreover, I show how Husserl’s peculiar formulation of a non-intuitive phantasy at stake in artistic (...) representation anticipates some uses of the imagination in Aesthetics suggested by Ernst Gombrich and Kendall Walton. La superación husserliana de las nociones representacionalistas e inmanentistas modernas de conciencia y conocimiento está atada al desarrollo temprano de su concepto sui generis de intencionalidad. Este desarrollo es fruto, a su vez, tanto de investigaciones lógicas como psicológicas, estas últimas dando paso a distintas formas de intuición: las formas fundadas –eidética y categorial– y las fundantes sensibles, todas las cuales presuponen el tipo básico y fundante –la percepción misma. Si bien el concepto de intencionalidad husserliano está determinado por el (...) descubrimiento de la “idealidad” en investigaciones lógico-semánticas, no menos relevante es el papel de las investigaciones psicológicas de Husserl y el desarrollo temprano de su noción no representacionalista de percepción. Este texto intentará echar luces sobre ciertos rasgos de la temprana fenomenología de la percepción de Husserl y su superación del representacionalismo. (shrink)

This study aims at exposing the phenomenological description of attention as presented by Husserl in his 1904-05 Göttingen-lecture Principal Parts of the Phenomenology and Theory of Knowledge, in its relevance for the study of so-called “intuitive re-presentations”, that is, phantasy and image-consciousness. Starting with the exposition of the fundamental traits of the intentional theory of attention, this study discusses the definition of attention in the terms of meaning [Meinen] and interest, which allows it to become an encompassing modification of all (...) kinds of lived experiences that does not imply an alteration of their act-character (Husserl, 2004: 73). We refer to this character of attention as “plasticity”. In what follows, the study underlines these two definitions of attention and their importance for the understanding of phantasy and image-consciousness. Both kinds of re-presentations will be described stressing the role of attention in the “structuring” of the intentional act and in its affective basis. Finally, the study deals more specifically with the complex description of image consciousness from the viewpoint of the attentional meaning of the image subject. (shrink)
