  1. Baroque Metaphysics: Studies on Francisco Suárez.Simone Guidi - 2020 - Coimbra, Portugal: Palimage.
This book collects six unpublished and published academic studies on the thought of Francisco Suárez, which is addressed through accurate textual analyses and meticulous contextualization of his doctrines in the Scholastic debate. The present essays aim to portray two complementary aspects coexisting in the work of the Uncommon Doctor: his innovative approach and his adherence to the tradition. To this scope, they focus on some pivotal, but often neglected, topics in Suárez’s metaphysics and psychology – such as his theories of (...)

Vít Gvoždiak published a reconciliatory analysis of Searle’s social ontology with semiotics in Gvoždiak (2012). Without prior knowledge of his paper, an analysis of the same subject appeared in Msimang (2014). Even though Searle’s social ontology is a common point of reference in the formulation of semiotics in these papers, it also serves as a point of departure in their understanding of semiotics and its development. The semiotic theory expressed in Gvoždiak (2012) is an inherently linguistic (speech act centred) theory, (...)

  • Can We Know Substances? Suárez on a Sceptical Puzzle.Dominik Perler - 2022 - Theoria 88 (1):244-269.
It has often been said that the knowability of substances became a problem in the early modern period, when anti-Aristotelians doubted that we could know anything more than the sensory qualities that are present to us. This article argues that the late scholastic Aristotelian Francisco Suárez was already aware of this sceptical problem. On his view, substances are really (and not just modally) distinct from the perceivable qualities, and therefore cannot be known through sense perception. The article first examines the (...)

  • Suárez on Visual Perception.Daniel Heider - 2017 - Scientia et Fides 5 (1):61-84.
This paper surveys the main issues in Suárez’s theory of visual perception, which in its complexity and systematical ordering has not been explored yet. These questions, exposed in the first five questions of the seventh disputation De sensibus exterioribus in particulari of Suárez’s Commentaria una cum quaestionibus in libros Aristotelis and in the first two sections of the fifth disputation De potentiis cognoscitivis in communi, are the following: 1) the nature of light; 2) the nature of colour; 3) the formal (...)

  • La relación transcendental aplicada a la relación alma y cuerpo en el hombre.Salvador Castellote - 2017 - Scientia et Fides 5 (1):291-311.
The transcendental relationship applied to the relationship soul and body in man: My goal is to analyse, first, the meaning of the category of the relationship, according to the concepts contained in the DM 47 over the predicamental and/or transcendental relationship category, applying it to the existing in the cosmos, the relationship between knowledge and the thing known and the compositum body-soul. Here I will make a reference to the similarity between Suarez and Kant about the postulate of the existence (...)
