  1. Zygmunt Bauman and the Consumption of Ethics by the Ethics of Consumerism.Bregham Dalgliesh - 2014 - Theory, Culture and Society 31 (4):97-118.
This article focuses on the ethical quandary of Zygmunt Bauman’s interpretation of modernity as a double logic that heralds both emancipation and domination. After outlining his liberation sociology and the liquid moral ontologies he discerns, it argues Bauman’s solution to the consumption of ethics by consumerism demands too much, too late. The actual outcome is the dissipation of the Levinasian centrifugal self, whom Bauman wants to uphold as a cure for the (...)

  • Sixty-three years of thinking sociologically: Compiling the bibliography of Zygmunt Bauman.Tom Campbell, Dariusz Brzeziński & Jack Palmer - 2020 - Thesis Eleven 156 (1):118-133.
The article has two aims: firstly, it provides a holistic account of Zygmunt Bauman’s oeuvre, and secondly, it presents an extensive up-to-date and multilingual bibliography of his published writings. The authors discuss Bauman’s prolificacy, as well as the stylistic, formal and substantive heterogeneity of his work. Taking this into account, they reflect on the curious reception of his oeuvre in the wider disciplinary field of sociology. The bibliography attached to the paper provides the most complete account of Bauman’s writings. Building (...)

  • The war against forgetfulness: Sociological lessons from Bauman’s writings on European Jewry.Matt Dawson - 2020 - Thesis Eleven 156 (1):86-101.
This paper argues against assigning Zygmunt Bauman to the category of a ‘white’, ‘European’ theorist and the tendency to speak of an undifferentiated ‘Eurocentrism’. To argue this, I return to a set of articles by Bauman which reflected on the history of European Jewry. These encourage us to place Bauman in a historical and social context in which he is best identified as emerging from the racialized and classed politics of East European Jewry. Bauman traces how this group were made (...)

  • The Role of the Intellectual in Liquid Modernity: An Interview with Zygmunt Bauman.Simon Dawes - 2011 - Theory, Culture and Society 28 (3):130-148.
The 85th birthday of Zygmunt Bauman in November 2010 presented the occasion for TCS to publish a special section of commissioned commentary pieces on a number of central themes in his work. The section, edited and introduced by editorial board member Roy Boyne, featured articles by Martin Jay, John Milbank and Julia Hell, and concentrated respectively upon the themes of modernity, the role of the intellectual, and the gaze of/at the other, highlighting the dependence on metaphor and the significance of (...)
