  1. Hallucinatory Telepathic Experiences Induced by Salvia divinorum.Grzegorz R. Juszczak - 2012 - Journal of Scientific Exploration 26 (2).
Scientific investigations of extrasensory perception are scarce despite the fact that anomalous paranormal experiences are common in psychiatric and general populations. This report investigated self-reported cases of telepathy-like experiences induced by smoking Salvia divinorum or by ingestion of LSD. Trip reports posted on a recreational drug website have been saved and analyzed for the presence of anomalous subjective effects. Telepathy-like experiences were reported both by subjects smoking S. divinorum and by subjects ingesting LSD, frequently in combination with other psychoactive substances (...)

  • Influencing choice without awareness.Jay A. Olson, Alym A. Amlani, Amir Raz & Ronald A. Rensink - 2015 - Consciousness and Cognition 37 (C):225-236.
Forcing occurs when a magician influences the audience's decisions without their awareness. To investigate the mechanisms behind this effect, we examined several stimulus and personality predictors. In Study 1, a magician flipped through a deck of playing cards while participants were asked to choose one. Although the magician could influence the choice almost every time (98%), relatively few (9%) noticed this influence. In Study 2, participants observed rapid series of cards on a computer, with one target card shown longer than (...)

  • Reports of Paranormal Experiences: Can Transliminality Tell Us Anything About Them?Michael A. Thalbourne - 2009 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 31 (3):375-386.
The psychology of belief in the paranormal has often been used to stigmatize believers but it has also been used with a more open-minded approach. This paper describes some research of this kind in which believers were found to report more mystical experience, have more creative personalities, report more manic and depressive experience, and more magical ideation, unwittingly suggesting a link with bipolar disorder and schizotypal personality. In addition, however, these six variables were all found to correlate positively and significantly (...)

  • What are sleep-related experiences? Associations with transliminality, psychological distress, and life stress.Nirit Soffer-Dudek & Golan Shahar - 2009 - Consciousness and Cognition 18 (4):891-904.
Sleep-related experiences [Watson, D. . Dissociations of the night: Individual differences in sleep-related experiences and their relation to dissociation and schizotypy. Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 110, 526–535] refer to a host of nocturnal altered-consciousness phenomena, including narcoleptic tendencies, nightmares, problem-solving dreams, waking dreams, and lucid dreams. In an attempt to clarify the meaning of this construct, we examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of sleep-related experiences , altered-consciousness tendencies , psychological distress, childhood maltreatment , and life stress in young adults. Both (...)

  • Identity and spirituality: Conventional and transpersonal perspectives.Douglas A. MacDonald - 2009 - International Journal of Transpersonal Studies 28 (1):86-106.
Though the relation of spirituality to self has long been recognized in established spiritual and religious systems, serious scientific interest in spirituality and its relation to identity has only started to grow in the past 20 years. This paper overviews the literature on spirituality and identity. Particular attention is given to describing and critiquing conventional and transpersonal perspectives with emphasis given to empirically testable theories. Using MacDonald’s five dimensional model of spirituality, a structural model of spirituality is proposed as is (...)

  • Case Study of Recognition Patterns in Haunted People Syndrome.James Houran & Brian Laythe - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Haunted People Syndrome denotes individuals who recurrently report various “supernatural” encounters in everyday settings ostensibly due to heightened somatic-sensory sensitivities to dis-ease states, which are contextualized by paranormal beliefs and reinforced by perceptual contagion effects. This view helps to explain why these anomalous experiences often appear to be idioms of stress or trauma. We tested the validity and practical utility of the HP-S concept in an empirical study of an active and reportedly intense ghostly episode that was a clinical referral. (...)

  • Paranormal belief, cognitive-perceptual factors, and well-being: A network analysis.Neil Dagnall, Andrew Denovan & Kenneth G. Drinkwater - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
By assessing interrelationships among variables within a specified theoretical framework, network analysis provides nuanced insights into how associations between psychological constructs are related to outcome measures. Noting this, the authors used NA to examine connections between Paranormal Belief, cognitive-perceptual factors, and well-being. Data derived from a sample of 3,090 participants who completed standardised self-report measures capturing the study constructs online. Transliminality, Unusual Experiences, and Depressive Experience demonstrated high expected influence centrality. This indicated that these factors were the most strongly connected (...)
