  1. Deleuze Among the Scotists: Difference-In-Itself and Ultima Differentia.Lucas Buchanan Carroll - 2022 - Deleuze and Guattari Studies 16 (3):331-378.
This article presents an interpretation of Deleuze’s concept of difference-in-itself. I argue that this is best understood as an adption of Duns Scotus’s concept of ultimate difference. After suggesting that the influence of Scotus on Deleuze extends beyond their shared commitment to the univocity of being, I turn to briefly review Deleuze’s notion of absolute difference. I proceed from there to explain Scotus’s accounts of univocity and ultimate difference, throughout noting the many stark parallels with Deleuze. On the basis of (...)

  • Aquinas on the Individuation of Substances.Jeffrey E. Brower - 2017 - Oxford Studies in Medieval Philosophy 5 (1).
Aquinas has much to say about individuation over the course of his career. Although certain aspects of his views appear to undergo development, there is one aspect that remains constant throughout—namely, his commitment to assigning both prime matter and quantity an essential role in the individuation of substances. This paper examines the vexed issue of how either prime matter or quantity, as Aquinas understands them, could have any role to play in this context. In the course of doing so, the (...)

  • Weak Discernibility in Quantum Mechanics: Does It Save PII?Jonas Rafael Becker Arenhart - 2013 - Axiomathes 23 (3):461-484.
The Weak Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles (weak PII), states that numerically distinct items must be discernible by a symmetrical and irreflexive relation. Recently, some authors have proposed that weak PII holds in non relativistic quantum mechanics, contradicting a long tradition claiming PII to be simply false in that theory. The question that arises then is: are relations allowed in the scope of PII? In this paper, we propose that quantum mechanics does not help us in deciding matters concerning (...)
