  1. The effect of congruent emotional context on semantic memory during discourse comprehension.Qian Zhang, Lin Li, Xiaohong Yang & Yufang Yang - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
This study examined the effect of emotional context on the semantic memory of subsequent emotional words during discourse comprehension in two eye-tracking experiments. Four-sentence discourses were used as experimental materials. The first three sentences established an emotional or neutral context, while the fourth contained an emotional target word consistent with the preceding emotional context's valence. The discourses were presented twice using the text change paradigm, where the target words were replaced with strongly - or weakly-related words during the second presentation. (...)

  • Fluctuation in cognitive engagement during listening and reading of erotica and horror stories.Ugo Ballenghein, Johanna K. Kaakinen, Geoffrey Tissier & Thierry Baccino - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
The present study examined whether emotional text content influences cognitive engagement and transportation during listening (Experiment 1) and reading (Experiment 2) of neutral, horror and erotic stories. In Experiment 1, fluctuation in arousal and cognitive engagement were measured by continuous arousal judgments and head movement recordings during story listening. Participants rated experienced transportation and emotional valence after each story. The results showed that emotional texts were more arousing and induced more transportation than neutral stories. There was less head motion overall (...)

This paper offers a detailed reconstruction of Frege’s theory of side-thoughts and its relation to other parts of his pragmatics, most notably to the notion of colouring, to the notion of presupposition, and to his implicit notion of multi-propositionality. I also highlight some important differences between the subsemantic categories employed by Frege and those used in contemporary pragmatics.

  • Positive Psychology Broadens Readers’ Attentional Scope During L2 Reading: Evidence From Eye Movements.Chi Yui Leung, Hitoshi Mikami & Lisa Yoshikawa - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10:472204.
While positive psychology has drawn increasing interests among researchers in the SLA literature recently, little is known with respect to the relationship between positive psychology and mental processes during L2 reading. To bridge the gap, the present study investigated whether and how positive psychology (self-efficacy) influences word reading strategies during L2 sentence reading. Based on previous studies, eye-movement patterns with first-fixation locations closer to the beginning of a word can be characterized as an attempt to process the word with a (...)

  • Emotion processing in concrete and abstract words: evidence from eye fixations during reading.Bo Yao, Graham G. Scott, Gillian Bruce, Ewa Monteith-Hodge & Sara C. Sereno - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
We replicated and extended the findings of Yao et al. [(2018). Differential emotional processing in concrete and abstract words. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 44(7), 1064–1074] regarding the interaction of emotionality, concreteness, and imageability in word processing by measuring eye fixation times on target words during normal reading. A 3 (Emotion: negative, neutral, positive) × 2 (Concreteness: abstract, concrete) design was used with 22 items per condition, with each set of six target words matched across conditions in (...)
