  • Justifying types of representative democracy: a response.Steffen Ganghof - 2024 - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy 27 (2):282-293.
    This article responds to critical reflections on my Beyond Presidentialism and Parliamentarism by Sarah Birch, Kevin J. Elliott, Claudia Landwehr and James L. Wilson. It discusses how different types of representative democracy, especially different forms of government (presidential, parliamentary or hybrid), can be justified. It clarifies, among other things, the distinction between procedural and process equality, the strengths of semi-parliamentary government, the potential instability of constitutional designs, and the difference that theories can make in actual processes of constitutional reform.

    University administrators should not enforce speech codes because speech codes are generally counterproductive to a university’s educational mission. In making the case against campus speech codes, we consider and reply to four of the most prominent arguments in favor of restricting student speech. These arguments appeal to the values of harm prevention, inclusive education, relational equality, and the overall promotion of free speech.     I propose a theory of popular power, according to which a political order manifests popular power to the extent it robustly maintains an egalitarian basic structure.     In response to the democratic boundary problem, two principles have been seen as competitors: the all-affected interests principle and the all-subjected principle.
