  1. “The Temporal ‘Succession’ of Here and Now Situations”: Schütz and Garfinkel on Sequentiality in Interaction.Lilian Coates - 2022 - Human Studies 45 (3):469-491.
The article re-examines the relationship between the works of Alfred Schütz and Harold Garfinkel, focusing on their respective approaches to temporality in interaction. Although there are good reasons to emphasize the differences between Schütz’s notion of individual projects of action and Garfinkel’s interest in communicative sequencing, there is also an interesting historical connection. • Interspecies Haptic Sociality: The Interactional Constitution of the Horse’s Esthesiologic Body in Equestrian Activities.Chloé Mondémé - 2023 - Human Studies 46 (4):701-721.

In this way, the horse is regarded as a living, sentient creature, whose body has haptic and kinesthetic properties, resulting in socialization practices that cultivate forms of care. The study discusses Merleau-Ponty’s (...)

  • Tracing the Seminal Notion of Accountability Across the Garfinkelian Œuvre.Timothy Koschmann - 2019 - Human Studies 42 (2):239-252.
The notion of accountability was introduced by Harold Garfinkel in the opening pages of Studies in Ethnomethodology as part of his ‘central recommendation’ for sociological inquiry. Though the term itself first appears in the Studies, it will be argued that elements of the idea were already discernible in earlier writings. The current article traces the development of the notion from its early emergence in the proto-ethnomethodological period, through its elaboration in the Studies, and, finally, to its refinement in certain later (...)
