  1. “Don't you think it is very exiting?” – Ein Beitrag zur Untersuchung des Hintergrunds der Entstehung des rotierenden Gödel-Universums.Tobias Jung - 2006 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 29 (4):325-340.
In 1949, Gödel published a paper on a new type of relativistic world models, namely the rotating Gödel universes. One remarkable feature of such models is the existence of closed time-like curves which means that they admit travelling in time. The question which I want to address is by which source Gödel might have been inspired when assuming a rotating universe. Although it is unlikely that he was influenced by predecessors like Anaxagoras, Descartes, Kant or Lambert or by the undoubtedly (...)

  • Verzeitlichungs‐ und Historisierungstendenzen in der frühen Geologie und Paläontologie.Wolfhart Langer - 1985 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 8 (2):87-97.
Steno described in 1669 geological sections which were interpreted as the result of a series of earlier events. Steno used actuogeological methods. This was the first step towards temporalizing nature. Steno was succeeded by a lot of other researchers from different European countries. It is amazing to see, that “actualism” was widespread during the 18th century. The next step was the discovery that fossils are extinct beings (Ray, Hooke and others). Using methods of comparing anatomy W. Hunter (forerunner of Cuvier) (...)

In his “Cosmogenische Betrachtungen” (1804), Anton von Zach rediscovered — probably independently — some aspects of the theories of Kant and Laplace. More originally, he envisaged also the consequences of an era of heavy impacts in the early history of the Earth.

  • Disziplinbildung und Vorlesungsalltag, Funktionen von Lehrbüchern der Physik um 1800 mit einem Fokus auf die Universität Jena.Jan Frercks - 2004 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 27 (1):27-52.
Physics textbooks from ca 1800 are on the one hand self reflective texts that consider the then emerging discipline ‚physics’︁, and serve on the other hand as the bread and butter for the day to day work of teachers and students of physics. The two parts of this paper explore this twofold nature. First, those textbooks written and used by professors in Jena, Halle and Göttingen are used in order to identify a typical textbook. This relies on a close examination (...)

  • Innovationsschübe durch Außenseiter: Das Beispiel des Amateur‐Astronomen William Herschel.Fritz Krafft - 1986 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 9 (4):201-225.
Innovatory advances by outsiders: The example of the amateur astronomer William Herschel. — Every scientific experience and perception has been gained from within a particular historical situation constituted by numerous components, both internal and external to a particular science, called praesentabilia (Präsentabilien). They enable and determine the scope and the experiental pale of any given science as well as its way and method of acquiring experience and knowledge. The interaction of such praesentabilia forms, what may be called the Historische Erfahrungsraum (...)
