With his doctrine of the “complete irresponsibility of man,” Nietzsche in different ways complicates the opposition between responsibility and irresponsibility. This article traces the different and conflicting senses of irresponsibility throughout Nietzsche’s development. First, the doctrine is shown to build on Nietzsche’s early study of Heraclitus (section I), whom Nietzsche admired for expounding and embodying a radical “innocence” that was both responsible and irresponsible in different senses. When presented as “philosophical conviction” in Human, All too Human, Nietzsche paradoxically speculates about (...) the doctrine’s incorporation out of a sense of responsibility for the future of mankind (section II). Section III shows how Nietzsche’s later writings evince an increasing awareness of this paradox by explicitly positing complete irresponsibility as his own redemptive doctrine in Twilight of the Idols. After 1881, he has come to affirm a new notion of responsibility and criticizes a weak sense of irresponsibility as the abdication of one’s task. I end by discussing the relation of these different senses of irresponsibility, and argue that the fact that Nietzsche’s texts often deliberately complicate rather than clarify such distinctions is an important reflection of how he textually takes responsibility for “complete irresponsibility” (section IV). Nietzsche and Zhuang Zi both believe that the supposed value of certain emotions they deem harmful should be questioned and that reflection can be utilized to change the emotions. They intend to disabuse those of their respective times of conventional morality, with the aim of achieving a state in which negative moral emotions are eliminated and a more natural way of life is embraced. Specifically, Nietzsche examines guilt, a remnant of an ascetic morality endorsed by the religious elite; Zhuang Zi, (...) similarly, considers grief, a moral emotion tied to traditional culture and endorsed by Confucian morality. Living naturally involves the absence of psychic conflict that accompanies negative emotions; it also involves a psychological ease within ourselves and with the world. (shrink)

In this study, it will be my concern to examine the argument for a discontinuity between Nietzsche’s early and ‘middle’ period writings. Specifically, I will address the notion that these earlier works represent something that had, by 1878, become intolerable for Nietzsche: life-denial. The typical reading of The Birth of Tragedy presents it as a work of Schopenhauerian pessimism, which offers the art of beautifying illusion as the only possible means to escape the relentless horror of existence. Scholarship in the (...) last 20 years has worked against this interpretation, and yet no scholar – perhaps with the exception of Michele Haar5 - has been able to fully endorse the claim made by Nietzsche in his 1886 preface to the work, “An Attempt at Self Criticism”: that Birth offered aesthetics as a remedy to life-denial. It was in the name of opposing this ethos – which Nietzsche most famously aligned with Christian and Buddhist asceticism – that the Free Spirit works were to wage their war against metaphysics and to denounce the ‘afterworldsmen’ who turn their back on life and seek for meaning in the Beyond. Through a reading of Birth, as well as its draft texts – “The Dionysian Worldview” and “The Greek Music Drama”-, the works’ proposed follow up Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks, and the lectures series this latter was based on I will argue for an alternative interpretation. From a Naturalist reading of these early texts and their ‘Aesthetic interpretation of Life’, I seek to trace a line of continuity that extends into the Free Spirit works. (shrink)
