  • Citizens of the Future: Beyond Normative Conditions through the Emergence of Desirable Collective Properties. [REVIEW]Zoraida Mendiwelso Bendek - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 39 (1/2):189 - 195.
In this paper I explore the influence of an organisation's structure, such as that of the National Education System, in the emergence of desirable social properties. In this case the concern is schools with adequate performance. It is assumed that there is a circular causality between structure and the social results of schools. I highlight some of the structural requirements to have justice, sense of belonging, trust, honesty and cooperation as emerging properties of these schools, beyond normative statements. These are (...)

  • Beyond the Public/Private Dichotomy: Relational Space and Sexual Inequalities.Chris Armstrong & Judith Squires - 2002 - Contemporary Political Theory 1 (3):261-283.
The public/private dichotomy has long been the object of considerable attention for feminists. We argue that, by focusing their attention on a divide which has declined in importance, feminists may fail to keep up with the current means by which sexual inequalities are perpetuated. Furthermore, by concentrating on this divide feminists risk reproducing such dichotomous thinking in their own work, discursively perpetuating that which they had initially hoped to displace. We begin by surveying feminist critiques of the public/private dichotomy, consider (...)

  • The Potential for Expressing Post-secular Citizenship Through the Deobandi Doctrine.Zahraa McDonald - 2013 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 33 (3):283-302.
Islamic education has been regarded as a thorn in the side of religious minority community integration into the nation state, and consequently to the expression of citizenship. Expressions of citizenship are associated with public participation while Islamic education is more readily associated with retreat and isolation of religious communities. At the same time the pervasiveness of religion in public life has led to calls for the post-secular—that is where religious communities are present in secular society. Habermas demonstrates that a public (...)

  • The Limits of European-Ness: Immigrant Women in Fortress Europe.Helma Lutz - 1997 - Feminist Review 57 (1):93-111.
This article is intended to contribute to the ongoing debate on the ideological, social and political formation of a New Europe. By focusing on the position of immigrant women it examines the gendered nature of the changing configurations of cultural and social European landscapes. Two features of immigrant women's positioning are the key issues of this analysis: regulations through national and European law and ideological representation. It is argued that the debate on European citizenship should be closely linked to the (...)
