  1. Patentable Novelty in Nanotechnology Inventions: a Legal Study in Iraq and Malaysia. [REVIEW]Nabeel Mahdi Althabhawi & Zinatul Ashiqin Zainol - 2013 - NanoEthics 7 (2):121-133.
Nanotechnology has been facing multiple obstacles related to the applicability of patentability criteria. In this article, the authors addressed the novelty requirement in nanotechnology inventions in Iraqi and Malaysian patent acts. First, novelty was discussed to determine its applicability in the field of nanotechnology. Then, problems on nanotechnology patent application were presented along with some suggested solutions. The problems encountered in the patentability of nanotechnology inventions were summarized in two categories. First, the multidisciplinary nature of nanotechnology casts its shadow on (...)

  • Person Skilled in the Art in Synthetic Biology from Iraqi and Malaysian Perspectives.Zinatul Ashiqin Zainol & Nabeel Mahdi Althabhawi - 2018 - NanoEthics 12 (1):55-60.
This article presents the problem of a person skilled in the field of synthetic biology. The person skilled in the art is one of the notions which have to be revisited due to the multidisciplinary nature of synthetic biology which involves numerous fields. The article studies this problem from the perspectives of Iraqi and Malaysian patent laws. First, it conceptualizes synthetic biology and person skilled in the art. The Iraqi and Malaysian attitudes regarding person skilled in the art are then (...)

  • The role of philosophy of science in Responsible Research and Innovation : the case of nanomedicine.Gry Oftedal - 2014 - Life Sciences, Society and Policy 10 (1):1-12.
Research on ethical, legal and social aspects of life sciences and new technologies has mainly been focused on impacts and consequences, while the emerging framework of Responsible Research and Innovation focuses rather on increased involvement and reflexivity in research processes to foster science and technology that better answers the needs of society. I argue that philosophy of science should be a central feature of RRI and demonstrate how the philosophy of science can contribute in this sense. I show how investigating (...)

  • Informed Consent in Asymmetrical Relationships: an Investigation into Relational Factors that Influence Room for Reflection.Shannon Lydia Spruit, Ibo Poel & Neelke Doorn - 2016 - NanoEthics 10 (2):123-138.
In recent years, informed consent has been suggested as a way to deal with risks posed by engineered nanomaterials. We argue that while we can learn from experiences with informed consent in treatment and research contexts, we should be aware that informed consent traditionally pertains to certain features of the relationships between doctors and patients and researchers and research participants, rather than those between producers and consumers and employers and employees, which are more prominent in the case of engineered nanomaterials. (...)
