  1. “Go to hell fucking faggots, may you die!” framing the LGBT subject in online comments.Fabienne Baider - 2018 - Lodz Papers in Pragmatics 14 (1):69-92.
This paper reports on a manual monitoring of online representations of LGBT persons in the Republic of Cyprus for the period April 2015–February 2016. The article contextualizes the prevalence of “hate speech” in online Greek Cypriot comments against LGBT individuals, and, more generally, against non-heterosexuals. Adopting a Foucauldian position vis-à-vis the social and discursive construction of sexuality, we outline, first, the socio-historical context with a focus on LGBT rights in the Republic of Cyprus and the nationalistic project construing sexualities. We (...)

  • Weaponized Subordination: How Incels Discredit Themselves to Degrade Women.Michael Halpin - 2022 - Gender and Society 36 (6):813-837.
In this article, I analyze weaponized subordination, wherein men strategically use their perceived subordinate masculine status to legitimate their degradation of women. I draw on a qualitative analysis of 9,062 comments made on a popular involuntary celibate discussion board. Incels are an online community of men who define themselves by their inability to participate in heterosexual sex/relationships. Incel forums are characterized by self-loathing, anger, and misogyny, with several incels having committed murders. I first detail the type of subordination incels argue (...)

  • From Reputation Capital to Reputation Warfare: Online Ratings, Trolling, and the Logic of Volatility.Emily Rosamond - 2020 - Theory, Culture and Society 37 (2):105-129.
What are the consequences of the tendency for ubiquitous online reputation calculation to lead not to more precise expressions of reputation capital but, rather, to greater reputational instability? This article contrasts two conceptions of online reputation, which enact opposing attitudes about the relation between reputation and the calculable. According to an early online reputation paradigm – reputation capital – users strove to achieve high scores, performing the presumption that reputation could be incrementally accumulated and consistently measured within relatively stable spheres (...)

  • Cis-Hetero-Misogyny Online.Louise Richardson-Self - 2019 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 22 (3):573-587.
This article identifies five genres of anti-queer hate speech found in The Australian’s Facebook comments sections, exposing and analyzing the ways in which such comments are used to derogate cisgender and (often) heterosexual women. One may be tempted to think of cis-het women as third-party victims of queerphobia; however, this article argues that these genres of anti-queer speech are, in fact, misogynistic. Specifically, it argues that these are instances of cis-hetero-misogynistic hate speech. Cis-hetero-misogyny functions as the “law enforcement branch” of (...)

  • Resisting anti-democratic values with misogynistic abuse against a Chilean right-wing politician on Twitter: The #CamilaPeluche incident.Daniela Ibarra Herrera & Daniela Silva-Paredes - 2022 - Discourse and Communication 16 (4):426-444.
This paper explores abuse received by a Chilean right-wing female politician in tweets produced with the #CamilaPeluche hashtag, which aimed to shame her sexually. The data considers the period of 22 days since the creation and spread of the hashtag, which took place 5 days into the 2019 uprising in Chile. This paper follows a corpus-based critical discourse analysis that examines the most frequently used adjectives, that is, predication strategies, that characterise the politician, as well as their legitimating function through (...)
