En un artículo anterior, titulado Filosofía de la naturaleza humana, he expuesto mi posición crítica respecto de las corrientes que abogan por la negación de la naturaleza humana, por su completa naturalización o por su completa artificialización. Aquí haré un breve resumen de esta posición, para a continuación profundizar en las críticas, pero ya en diálogo con varios autores que configuran un cambio de perspectiva contemporáneo respecto de la cuestión. En su conjunto, estos autores presentan una crítica muy lúcida al (...) naturalismo vigente, así como sugerencias interesantes para una nueva y más acertada teoría de la naturaleza humana. Me detendré especialmente en las aportaciones de Thomas Nagel, porque creo que echan las bases para un posible diálogo constructivo, en torno a la naturaleza humana, entre posiciones teístas y no teístas. Este diálogo ha de apoyarse, según defiendo en el apartado conclusivo, en las indicaciones del sentido común crítico., anidación, fecundación, diálogo. (shrink)

Neuroscience promises us to explain philosophical issues, from ethics to general philosophy, as brain activity. I this paper we will propose expose the naturalistic view of neurophilosphy, show many problems of this proposal and how a dualistic ontology helps solve efficently these problems.

This article deals mainly with problems of cultural/transcultural translation between the Quechua and Spanish cultures, analysing these on the basis of some ideas by Juri Lotman and Peeter Torop. The process of translation implies considering the Quechua semiosphere’s internal borders as well as the external borders related to the cultures that existed at the time of Tahuantin Suyo, and all changes that have come from the Spanish conquest of Latin America. In the case of the Quechua culture, the problems are (...) numerous and conflicting in several dimensions. First of all, Quechua is an agglutinating language that creates problems for translation into a flexional language such as Spanish. Secondly, and more importantly, there exists a mythopoetical model of the world that has been built in this culture, which does not use concepts of rational logic, but poetic images integrated into mythical thinking: it represents a different cognitive pattern. Thirdly, the presence of the logic of the concrete in Quechua culture, articulated with the mythopoetical model, makes translation from Western abstract formal logic difficult. In this paper, we critically analyze the mechanicist approach to scientific explanation and propose to complement this view with a conception of level as interval of quasi-decompositionality. This conception allows us to metaphysically base the mechanicist proposals on characteristic systemic features. By means of concrete examples, we claim that this proposal is able to overcome some of the alleged limitations of predominant models of mechanistic explanation.

The notion of emergence has accompanied philosophy of science since the late XIX century, claiming that in some systems there are properties in certain levels that cannot be deduced from properties of their components as seen in more fundamental levels. Throughout the XX century, emergence has been characterized by four pillars: unpredictability, novelty, restriction and downward causation. These four pillars have been related to the assumption of a hierarchical order of reality in different levels of organization. Este ensayo ofrece un análisis crítico del último argumento que el matemático y filósofo Roger Penrose ofrece a favor de la tesis según la cual hay habilidades de la mente humana que nunca podrán ser igualadas por ingenio mecánico alguno. Al mismo tiempo se ofrece una descripción general de los últimos episodios del eterno enfrentamiento entre mentalismo y mecanicismo y se concluye con una sugerencia acerca de los puntos en los que cabe esperar nuevas situaciones de tensión entre estos dos (...) grandes paradigmas. Este trabajo pretende, además, mostrar la vigencia de un tipo de filosofía elaborada a partir de las herramientas de la ciencia moderna cuyos problemas son, no obstante, los del pensamiento filosófico tradicional.
