  • Paradoxes.Piotr Łukowski - 2011 - Dordrecht and New York: Springer.
This book, provides a critical approach to all major logical paradoxes: from ancient to contemporary ones. There are four key aims of the book: 1. Providing systematic and historical survey of different approaches – solutions of the most prominent paradoxes discussed in the logical and philosophical literature. 2. Introducing original solutions of major paradoxes like: Liar paradox, Protagoras paradox, an unexpected examination paradox, stone paradox, crocodile, Newcomb paradox. 3. Explaining the far-reaching significance of paradoxes of vagueness and change for philosophy (...)

  • Leibniz’s Lingua Characteristica and Its Contemporary Counterparts.Anna Pietryga - 2010 - Studia Semiotyczne—English Supplement 27:241-253.
There is no need to introduce Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, a great philosopher, theologian, diplomat, creator of the infinitesimal calculus and founder of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. He also planned the development of the so-called Lingua characteristica. Literally taken, the name of the language means a language of letters, a graphic language, also called a characteristica universalis. It was meant to be a way of expressing meanings, as modeled after methods used in arithmetic and geometry and having unusual properties.

  • The Formal Principle of Inconsistency in Logic and Natural Language.Anna Pietryga - 2004 - Studia Semiotyczne—English Supplement 25:45-56.
The formal principle of inconsistency in logic, in the form in which it comes from Aristotle, asserts that two contradictory judgments are not both true. Since the 20th century logic has progressed towards ever higher formality, it might be more suitable to say that inconsistent sentences, rather than judgments, cannot be both true.1 The universally accepted and lectured classical calculus of sentences2 adopts this principle without reservations. Some of the more recent logical systems are limiting the scope of its applicability, (...)

  • Empty signifiers, education and politics.Tomasz Szkudlarek - 2007 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 26 (3):237-252.
The paper assumes that education is part of the process of discursive construction of society. The theoretical framework on which this argument is based includes Ernesto Laclau’s theory of the “ontological impossibility and political necessity of society”, and the role discourse and empty signifiers play in the establishment of political identities. Laclau’s theory is supplemented here by ideas of Derrida, Lacan, Žižek and Marx, and by other traits in contemporary semiotics that relate to the notion of “the void” in semantic (...)

  • O przedmiocie metodologii nauk. Na marginesie książki Zygmunta Hajduka Struktury metodologiczne w nauce. Słowa klucze filozofii nauki.Monika Walczak - 2018 - Roczniki Filozoficzne 66 (2):23-46.
Moja (...)

The paper provides an analysis of two traditionally accepted distinctions between nominal and real definitions. The historical background is Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz’s conceptions of definitions as well as remarks by other members of the Lvov-Warsaw School of philosophy. The aim of the paper is to show that the analysed distinction, at least in Ajdukiewicz’s version, cannot be sustained.

In British and American anthropological literature, the ethnology of Central and Eastern European countries has shared in the plight of descriptions of this part of the world: it was seen as exotic, foreign, remote, a backwater, focused on sideline problems and situated on the periphery of this field of science. This state of affairs has been the case since at least the beginning of the Cold War as the descriptions of the national characters of Eastern Bloc communities, drafted by American (...)
