  1. The ethical night of libertinism: Beauvoir's reading of Sade.Anna Petronella Foultier - 2022 - Continental Philosophy Review (not yet assigned):1-21.
This paper examines Simone de Beauvoir’s reading of the 18th century writer and libertine Marquis de Sade, in her essay “Must we Burn Sade?”; a difficult and bewildering text, both in pure linguistic terms and philosophically. In particular, Beauvoir’s insistence on Sade as a “great moralist” seems hard to reconcile with her emphasis, in The Ethics of Ambiguity, on the interdependency of human beings and her exhortation to us to promote other people’s freedom, as well as the aspiration of The (...)

The review identifies the components of H. M. Lloyd’s contextual intellectual reconstruction of Marquis de Sade’s philosophical system in the context of the Enlightenment. The fundamental importance of the Enlightenment discourse of sensibility, its influence on the theory of natural law and moral philosophy of the eighteenth century is established. The main stages of reconstruction of Sade’s “system” are demonstrated, namely: 1) philosophical context (ontology and epistemology) as a discourse of sensibility; 2) particularities of the “roman philosophique” as a genre; (...)

The article starts from the question of where the theses that we are ruled by sadists today come from, both in conspiracy theories and in explanations of the prevalence of violence and cruelty in modern society. The article first highlights some important recent changes in politics, economics, and society (the fall of the Berlin Wall; victimisation; the crisis of politics and the rise of neoliberalism; the changing dynamics of capitalism, which appropriates and valorises affect and favours the bizarre; the new (...)

  • Ревізіоністсько-контекстуальна реконструкція філософської «системи» мар- кіза де Сада. Lloyd, H.M. (2018) Sade’s Philosophical System in its Enlightenment Context. Saint Lucia: Springer International Publishing; Palgrave Macmillan.

The literary oeuvre of Marquis de Sade (1740–1814) has attracted a great deal of interest over the past 200 years, not only from writers, but also from numerous leading philosophers. Among them is Georges Bataille, who particularly emphasizes the apathetic character of the Sadean libertines, meaning that they feel nothing at all. More specifically, the French philosopher focuses on their apathetic enjoyment that goes hand in hand with the abuse of victims. The goal of this article is to clarify that (...)
