  1. Language Usage and Second Language Morphosyntax: Effects of Availability, Reliability, and Formulaicity.Rundi Guo & Nick C. Ellis - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12:582259.
A large body of psycholinguistic research demonstrates that both language processing and language acquisition are sensitive to the distributions of linguistic constructions in usage. Here we investigate how statistical distributions at different linguistic levels – morphological and lexical (Experiments 1 and 2), and phrasal (Experiment 2) – contribute to the ease with which morphosyntax is processed and produced by second language learners. We analyze Chinese ESL learners’ knowledge of four English inflectional morphemes:-ed,-ing, and third-person-son verbs, and plural-son nouns. In Elicited (...)

  • When Children's Production Deviates From Observed Input: Modeling the Variable Production of the English Past Tense.Libby Barak, Zara Harmon, Naomi H. Feldman, Jan Edwards & Patrick Shafto - 2023 - Cognitive Science 47 (8):e13328.
As children gradually master grammatical rules, they often go through a period of producing form‐meaning associations that were not observed in the input. For example, 2‐ to 3‐year‐old English‐learning children use the bare form of verbs in settings that require obligatory past tense meaning while already starting to produce the grammatical –ed inflection. While many studies have focused on overgeneralization errors, fewer studies have attempted to explain the root of this earlier stage of rule acquisition. In this work, we use (...)

  • Disentangling Effects of Input Frequency and Morphophonological Complexity on Children's Acquisition of Verb Inflection: An Elicited Production Study of Japanese.Tomoko Tatsumi, Ben Ambridge & Julian M. Pine - 2018 - Cognitive Science 42 (S2):555-577.
This study aims to disentangle the often-confounded effects of input frequency and morphophonological complexity in the acquisition of inflection, by focusing on simple and complex verb forms in Japanese. Study 1 tested 28 children aged 3;3–4;3 on stative and simple past forms, and Study 2 tested 30 children aged 3;5–5;3 on completive and simple past forms, with both studies using a production priming paradigm. Mixed effects models for children's responses were built to test the prediction that children's verb use is (...)

  • Gradual Route to Productivity: Evidence from Turkish Morphological Causatives.Ebru Ger, Guanghao You, Aylin C. Küntay, Tilbe Göksun, Sabine Stoll & Moritz M. Daum - 2022 - Cognitive Science 46 (12):e13210.
Becoming productive with grammatical categories is a gradual process in children's language development. Here, we investigated this transition process by focusing on Turkish causatives. Previous research examining spontaneous and elicited production of Turkish causatives with familiar verbs attested the onset and early stages of productivity at ages 2 to 3 (Aksu-Koç & Slobin, 1985; Nakipoğlu, Uzundag, & Sarıgül, 2021). So far, however, we know very little about children's understanding of causatives with novel verbs. In the present study, we asked: (a) (...)
