  1. Blurred Boundaries: Toward an Expanded Ethics of Research and Clinical Care.Nate W. Olson & Meghan C. Halley - 2023 - American Journal of Bioethics 23 (8):5-9.
In this issue, Morain and Largent (2023) raise a pressing issue arising in the context of embedded research—the nature and extent of investigator duties to patient-participants when the line betwee...

  • A chronological discourse analysis of ancillary care provision in guidance documents for research conduct in the global south.Blessings M. Kapumba, Nicola Desmond & Janet Seeley - 2022 - BMC Medical Ethics 23 (1):1-16.
Introduction Numerous guidelines and policies for ethical research practice have evolved over time, how this translates to global health practice in resource-constrained settings is unclear. The purpose of this paper is to describe how the concept of ancillary care has evolved over time and how it is included in the ethics guidelines and policy documents that guide the conduct of research in the global south with both an international focus and providing a specific example of Malawi, where the first author (...)

  • Ancillary Care: From Theory to Practice in International Clinical Research.B. Pratt, D. Zion, K. M. Lwin, P. Y. Cheah, F. Nosten & B. Loff - 2013 - Public Health Ethics 6 (2):154-169.
How international research might contribute to justice in global health has not been substantively addressed by bioethics. This article describes how the provision of ancillary care can link international clinical research to the reduction of global health disparities. It identifies the ancillary care obligations supported by a theory of global justice, showing that Jennifer Ruger’s health capability paradigm requires the delivery of ancillary care to trial participants for a limited subset of conditions that cause severe morbidity and mortality. Empirical research (...)

  • Referral of Research Participants for Ancillary Care in Community-Based Public Health Intervention Research: A Guiding Framework.Maria W. Merritt, Joanne Katz, Ramin Mojtabai & Keith P. West - 2016 - Public Health Ethics 9 (1):104-120.
Researchers conducting large community-based studies among underserved populations may collect data on health conditions that are little-acknowledged in the local setting, and for which there are few if any services for referral of participants who need follow-up diagnosis and care. In the design and planning of studies for such settings, investigators and research ethics committees may struggle to determine what constitutes effective referral and whether it is reasonably available. We offer a guiding framework for referral planning, informed by our experiences (...)
