  1. Effort Worth Making: A Qualitative Study of How Swedes Respond to Antibiotic Resistance.Mirko Ancillotti, Stefan Eriksson, Tove Godskesen, Dan I. Andersson & Jessica Nihlén Fahlquist - 2021 - Public Health Ethics 14 (1):1-11.
Due to the alarming rise of antibiotic resistance, medically unwarranted use of antibiotics has assumed new moral significance. In this paper, a thematic content analysis of focus group discussions was conducted to explore lay people’s views on the moral challenges posed by antibiotic resistance. The most important finding is that lay people are morally sensitive to the problems entailed by antibiotic resistance. Participants saw the decreasing availability of effective antibiotics as a problem of justice. This involves individual as well as (...)

  • Integrating philosophy, policy and practice to create a just and fair health service.Zoe Fritz & Caitríona L. Cox - 2020 - Journal of Medical Ethics 46 (12):797-802.
To practise ‘fairly and justly’ a clinician must balance the needs of both the many and the few: the individual patient in front of them, and the many unseen patients in the waiting room, and in the county. They must consider the immediate clinical needs of those in the present, and how their actions will impact on future patients. The good medical practice guidance ‘Make the care of your patient your first concern’ provides no guidance on how doctors should act (...)

  • The Ethical Significance of Antimicrobial Resistance.Jasper Littmann & A. M. Viens - 2015 - Public Health Ethics 8 (3):209-224.
In this paper, we provide a state-of-the-art overview of the ethical challenges that arise in the context of antimicrobial resistance, which includes an introduction to the contributions to the symposium in this issue. We begin by discussing why AMR is a distinct ethical issue, and should not be viewed purely as a technical or medical problem. In the second section, we expand on some of these arguments and argue that AMR presents us with a broad range of ethical problems that (...)

  • Gut Health in the era of the Human Gut Microbiota: from metaphor to biovalue.Vincent Baty, Bruno Mougin, Catherine Dekeuwer & Gérard Carret - 2014 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 17 (4):579-597.
The human intestinal ecosystem, previously called the gut microflora is now known as the Human Gut Microbiota. Microbiome research has emphasized the potential role of this ecosystem in human homeostasis, offering unexpected opportunities in therapeutics, far beyond digestive diseases. It has also highlighted ethical, social and commercial concerns related to the gut microbiota. As diet factors are accepted to be the major regulator of the gut microbiota, the modulation of its composition, either by antibiotics or by food intake, should be (...)

  • What High-Income States Should Do to Address Industrial Antibiotic Pollution.Erik Malmqvist & Christian Munthe - 2020 - Public Health Ethics 13 (3):275-287.
Antibiotic resistance is widely recognized as a major threat to public health and healthcare systems worldwide. Recent research suggests that pollution from antibiotics manufacturing is an important driver of resistance development. Using Sweden as an example, this article considers how industrial antibiotic pollution might be addressed by public actors who are in a position to influence the distribution and use of antibiotics in high-income countries with publicly funded health systems. We identify a number of opportunities for these actors to incentivize (...)

  • The Choice to Travel: Health Tourists and the Spread of Antibiotic Resistance.Michael R. Millar - 2015 - Public Health Ethics 8 (3):238-245.
Individuals are at risk of acquiring untreatable agents of infection when they travel to countries where antibiotic-resistant agents of infection are prevalent, and particularly when they travel for healthcare. Uncertainty with respect to the overall political and economic consequences seems to underlie the reluctance of public health authorities to issue relevant travel advisories. The conditions of choice, the act of choice and the consequences of choice can each be a primary focus of ethical appraisal of public health policy. The ‘value (...)

  • Is Antimicrobial Resistance a Slowly Emerging Disaster?A. M. Viens & Jasper Littmann - 2015 - Public Health Ethics 8 (3):255-265.
The problem of antimicrobial resistance is so dire that people are predicting that the era of antibiotics may be coming to an end, ushering in a ‘post-antibiotic’ era. A comprehensive policy response is therefore urgently needed. A part of this response will require framing the problem in such a way that adequately reflects its nature as well as encompassing an approach that has the best prospect of success. This paper considers framing the problem as a slowly emerging disaster, including its (...)

  • Antibiotic resistance: ethical aspects of an urgent challenge.
