  1. Foucault and Rorty on truth and ideology: A pragmatist view from the left.Chandra Kumar - 2005 - Contemporary Pragmatism 2 (1):35-94.
An anti-representationalist view of language and a deflationary view of truth, key themes in contemporary pragmatism and especially Richard Rorty, do not undermine the notion, in critical theory, of ideology as 'false consciousness'. Both Foucault and Marx were opposed to what Marxists call historical idealism and so they should be seen as objecting to forms of ideology-critique that do not sufficiently avoid such an 'Hegelian' perspective. Foucault's general views on the relations between truth and power can plausibly be construed in (...)

  • Michel Foucault and Judith Butler: troubling Butler's appropriation of Foucault's work.Kathleen Ennis - unknown
One of the main influences on Judith Butler‘s thinking has been the work of Michel Foucault. Although this relationship is often commented on, it is rarely discussed in any detail. My thesis makes a contribution in this area. It presents an analysis of Foucault‘s work with the aim of countering Butler‘s representation of his thinking. In the first part of the thesis, I show how Butler initially interprets Foucault‘s project through Nietzschean genealogy, psychoanalysis and Derridean discourse, and how she later (...)

  • Marx, realism and Foucault : an enquiry into the problem of industrial relations theory.Richard Marsden - unknown
This thesis constructs a model of the material causes of the capacity of individuals to act at work, by using the ontology of scientific realism to facilitate a synthesis between Marx and Foucault. This synthetic model is submitted as a solution to the long-standing problem of Industrial Relations theory, now manifest in the deconstruction of the organon of 'control'. The problems of 'control' are rooted in the radical concept of power and traditional, base/superstructure, interpretations of Marx. Developing an alternative to (...)

  • A Slovene president's self-help discourse: making Slovenes more positive.Karmen Erjavec & Zala Volćić - 2009 - Critical Discourse Studies 6 (2):97-110.
In this article we examine the self-help discourses in Slovene President Drnovsek's blog, which he uses as the main tool to communicate with the Slovene public. On the basis of a critical discourse analysis of Drnovsek's writings, we argue that Drnovsek recontextualises Slovene political discourse and replaces it with a particular type of therapeutic discourse. We explore Drnovsek's self-help discourse as a way of approaching some issues associated with the ‘post-socialist’ condition. We suggest that his discourse attempts to direct citizens (...)

The ArgumentThis paper describes the way in which a simple device, the pregnancy wheel, has been used by the medical profession to impose a new way of measuring and experiencing pregnancy. The change involves counting in weeks instead of counting in months and it is gradually replacing a commonsensical method that had deep physiological and cultural roots. In contrast, the medical methodology of counting forty weeks is more complicated and lacks direct connections to the events of pregnancyIn the encounter between the (...)
