  • Theoretical and Methodological Context of (Post)-Modern Econometrics and Competing Philosophical Discourses for Policy Prescription.Emerson Abraham Jackson - 2018 - Journal of Heterodox Economics 4 (2):119-129.
This research article was championed as a way of providing discourses pertaining to the concept of "Critical Realism (CR)" approach, which is amongst many othe forms of competing postmodern philosophical concepts for the engagement of dialogical discourses in the area of established econonetric methodologies for effective policy prescription in the economic science discipline. On the the whole, there is no doubt surrounding the value of empirical endeavours in econometrics to address real world economic problems, but equally so, the heavy weighted (...)

  • A realist evaluation of post-implementation modifications: a context-initiative-mechanism-outcome perspective.Taiwo Oseni, Mahbubur Rahim & Susan Foster - 2023 - Journal of Critical Realism 22 (4):645-669.
This paper exemplifies a theoretical and methodological evaluation of IT Initiatives. It discusses post-implementation modifications (ERP-PIM) to enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems for the purpose of business process optimization (BPO) from a Context-Initiative-Mechanism-Outcome (CIMO) perspective. CIMO suggests that context and mechanisms are factors triggering causal effects responsible for outcomes derived from technology initiatives. Through conceptualization, data collection/analysis, and retroduction, the paper proposes a middle-range theory to facilitate the explanation of outcomes from diverse post-implementation initiatives. Data from multiple case study identifies (...)

  • The Bitcoin protocol as a system of power.Efpraxia D. Zamani - 2022 - Ethics and Information Technology 24 (1):1-14.
In this study, I use the Critical Realism perspective of power to explain how the Bitcoin protocol operates as a system of power. I trace the ideological underpinnings of the protocol in the Cypherpunk movement to consider how notions of power shaped the protocol. The protocol by design encompasses structures, namely Proof of Work and Trustlessness that reproduce asymmetrical constraints on the entities that comprise it. These constraining structures generate constraining mechanisms, those of cost effectiveness and deanonymisation, which further restrict (...)

I argue that there are no plausible non-representational explanations of episodes of hallucination. To make the discussion more specific, I focus on visual hallucinations in Charles Bonnet syndrome. I claim that the character of such hallucinatory experiences cannot be explained away non-representationally, for they cannot be taken as simple failures of cognizing or as failures of contact with external reality—such failures being the only genuinely non-representational explanations of hallucinations and cognitive errors in general. I briefly introduce a recent computational model (...)

  • Theorizing routines with computational sequence analysis : a critical realism framework.Zhewei Zhang, Habin Lee, Youngjin Yoo & Youngseok Choi - forthcoming - Journal of the Association for Information Systems.
We develop a methodological framework to develop process theories on routines by leveraging large volumes of digital trace data following critical realism principles. Our framework begins with collecting and preprocessing digital trace data, corresponding to the empirically observed experience of critical realism. In the second and third steps of the framework, we identify a finite set of similar repetitive patterns (routines) through computational analysis. We accomplish this by combining frequent subsequence mining and clustering analysis to transform empirical observation into a (...)

  • On routines and generative systems: investigating the emergence of duty prosecutors using critical realist case study principles.F. Iannacci & A. Resca - 2016 - In F. Iannacci & A. Resca (eds.).
Drawing on the notion of mechanisms as systems of constitutive rules, this paper advocates a reappraisal of the generative systems metaphor in routines studies. While the recent practice-turn to routines studies has turned a blind-eye to the notion of generative systems, this paper endeavours to use critical realist tenets to shed a new light on the notion of generative systems. By analyzing the emergence of Duty Prosecutors as an instance of routinization in the making, the paper deploys critical realist case (...)

  • A critical realist method for applied business research.John McAvoy & Tom Butler - 2018 - Journal of Critical Realism 17 (2):160-175.
ABSTRACTWhile the business research community has moved from describing critical realism as simply a compromise philosophy between positivists and interpretivists to its acceptance in its own right, it still lacks a choice of methods or processes for the business researcher to utilize. This paper presents a proposed method that can be used by business researchers who follow the critical realist paradigm. It explores the suitability of a critical realist approach to applied business and the importance of combining the ontological and (...)
