  1. Business ethical values in china and the U.s.Laura L. Whitcomb, Carolyn B. Erdener & Chen Li - 1998 - Journal of Business Ethics 17 (8):839-852.
The research presented in this paper focuses on business ethical values inChina, a country in which the process of institutional transformation has left cultural values in a state of flux. A survey was conducted in China and the U.S. by using five business scenarios. Survey results show similarities between the Chinese and American decision choices for three out of five scenarios. However, the results reveal significant differences in rationales, even forsimilar decisions. The implications of similarities and differences between the U.S. (...)

  • Codes of ethics in Hong Kong: Their adoption and impact in the run up to the 1997 transition of sovereignty to china. [REVIEW]Robin S. Snell, Almaz M.-K. Chak & Jess W.-H. Chu - 1999 - Journal of Business Ethics 22 (4):281 - 309.
Following a government campaign run by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in 1994, many Hong Kong companies and trade associations adopted written codes of conduct. The research study reported here examines how and why companies responded, and assesses the impact of code adoption on the moral climate of code adopters. The research involved (a) initial questionnaire surveys to which 184 organisations replied, (b) longitudinal questionnaire-based assessments of moral ethos and conduct in a focal sample of 17 code adopting companies, (...)

  • Taking Stock of Accounting Ethics Scholarship: A Review of the Journal Literature. [REVIEW]Roberta Bampton & Christopher J. Cowton - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 114 (3):549-563.
The proportion of business ethics literature devoted to accounting and the proportion of academic accounting literature devoted to ethical issues are both small, yet over the past two decades there has been a steady accumulation of research devoted to ethical issues in accounting. Based on a database of more than 500 articles gathered from a wide range of accounting and business ethics academic journals, this paper describes and analyses the characteristics of what has been published in the past 20 years (...)

  • Does the Accounting Profession Discipline Its Members Differently After Public Scrutiny?Devan Mescall, Fred Phillips & Regan N. Schmidt - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 142 (2):285-309.
This study examines how the accounting profession disciplines its members for professional misconduct in periods of increased public scrutiny. We conjecture and find that increased public scrutiny of the Canadian accounting profession, marked by the establishment of the Canadian Public Accountability Board in 2003, is positively associated with the severity of punitive sanctions administered by the profession’s disciplinary committees. We find that disciplinary committees are more likely to also demand rehabilitation outcomes and greater future monitoring for offenders. Finally, reporting of (...)

  • Private/public interest and the enforcement of a code of professional conduct.James Fisher, Sally Gunz & John McCutcheon - 2001 - Journal of Business Ethics 31 (3):191 - 207.
There has been considerable interest in the literature about how professions operate in both the private and public interest. This paper examines this issue in the context of the enforcement of the professional code of conduct of a particular professional accounting association. The paper explores whether certain enforcement actions of the association suggest behaviour motivated at least partially by private interest. It then considers whether the consequences of such behaviour or practices are troubling.

  • (3 other versions)A content analysis of codes of ethics from fifty‐seven national accounting organisations.Brian Farrell & Deirdre Cobbin - 2000 - Business Ethics, the Environment and Responsibility 9 (3):180–190.
The paper identifies in the literature two categories of codes of ethics, inspirational and prescriptive, and introduces new classification categories of allodial and decretal. The first classification is based on the identity of the ethics decision‐maker – the authors or the addressees of codes. The second classification is based on whether operational definitions are applied by the codes. Such concrete definitions may be in the rules themselves, in related documents or be known from shared knowledge. The second classification has importance (...)
