  1. Technics and (para)praxis: the Freudian dimensions of Lewis Mumford’s theories of technology.Gregory Morgan Swer - 2004 - History of the Human Sciences 17 (4):45-68.
The purpose of this article is to establish that Lewis Mumford’s historical and philosophical writings were heavily influenced by the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud. It is argued that Freudian ideas and concepts played a foundational role in the construction of Mumford’s views on the nature and function of mind, culture and history, which in turn founded his views on the relationship between technology and society. Indeed, it is argued that a full understanding of Mumford’s technological writings cannot be achieved (...)

  • Technology from the standpoint of sunyata.Alessandro Tomasi - 2008 - Asian Philosophy 18 (3):197 – 212.
_Keiji Nishitani's critique of technology as a dehumanizing force is objected to by showing that it is possible to establish a relationship with technology characterized by the standpoint of sunyata. In order to support my claim, I offer an interpretation of sunyata as a lived experience in which knowing and being are unified. One method used to experience the identity of knowing and being is the method of negatio negationis. I argue that technology embodies this method, and that thus has (...)

  • Challenging Standard Distinctions between Science and Technology: The Case of Preparative Chemistry.Joachim Schummer - 1997 - Hyle 3 (1):81 - 94.
Part I presents a quantitative-empirical outline of chemistry, esp. preparative chemistry, concerning its dominant role in today's science, its dynamics, and its methods and aims. Emphasis is laid on the poietical character of chemistry for which a methodological model is derived. Part II discusses standard distinction between science and technology, from Aristotle (whose theses are reconsidered in the light of modern sciences) to modern philosophy of technology. Against the background of results of Part I, it is argued that all these (...)
