  1. Acting as if: the utopian political thought and actions of the US disability rights movement.Gisli Vogler - forthcoming - Contemporary Political Theory:1-20.
This article studies the response of the US disability community to the prevalent assumption that disabled people do not have a future, in the form of the disability rights movement. It provides an exploratory discussion of the key role played by utopianism in the response. In doing so, the article adds to critical theorizing on the importance of utopia to the oppression of non-dominant groups and to transcending that oppression. I use utopian studies scholarship to interpret the activities leading up (...)

  • Humanistic Ethics of Humor: The Problematics of Punching Up and Kicking Down.Jarno Hietalahti - 2024 - The Philosophy of Humor Yearbook 5 (1):91-119.
This article discusses the very common moral guideline “Punch up, do not kick down.” Our approach is based on humanistic ethics, and through rigorous philosophical analysis, we will show that while the guideline is commendable and well-intentioned, it does not work as a universal rule and should not be used as an ideological tool. Due to the complexity of our social reality and the fluid nature of hierarchies, there may be cases when punching up is problematic, and kicking down is (...)

  • Mind your Prayers. Aristotle’s Notion of euchê.Pavlos Kontos - 2023 - Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie 105 (3):388-413.
In Aristotle’s world there is no God to answer our prayers (euchê) and yet prayers follow the excellent city of the Politics like a shadow. Nonetheless, as far as I know, people have been content to narrow the focus of investigation to Aristotle’s utopia, its plausibility, structure and infrastructure, leaving prayers out of the picture. The most prayers themselves seem to deserve is a footnote or so. The result is that attention is switched away from the most basic questions: What (...)

  • The Specter of Automation.Zachary Biondi - 2023 - Philosophia 51 (3):1093-1110.
Karl Marx took technological development to be the heart of capitalism’s drive and, ultimately, its undoing. Machines are initially engineered to perform functions that otherwise would be performed by human workers. The economic logic pushed to its limits leads to the prospect of full automation: a world in which all labor required to meet human needs is superseded and performed by machines. To explore the future of automation, the paper considers a specific point of resemblance between human beings and machines: (...)

Petro Sukhorolskyi - 2019 - Multiversum. Philosophical Almanac:32-54.
