Can we really perceive absences, i.e., missing things? Sartre tells us that when he arrived late for his appointment at the café, he saw the absence of his friend Pierre. Is that really what he saw? Where was it, exactly? Why didn’t Sartre see the absence of other people who were not there? Why did other people who were there not see the absence of Pierre? The perception of absences gives rise to a host of conundrums and is constantly on (...) the verge of conceptual confusion. Here I focus on the need to be clear about four sorts of distinctions: (i) the difference between perceiving an absence and perceiving something that is absent; (ii) the difference between perceiving an absence and an absence of perceiving; (iii) the difference between perceiving an absence and perceiving something as an absence; and (iv) the difference between perceiving an absence and perceiving that something is absent. Dispositions (powers, potentialities) have become popular in metaphysics in recent years, and some of their proponents are advertising them as the best metaphysical grounds for modality. This project has a logical as well as an ontological side: dispositionalists offer modal and counterfactual semantics that make no use of possible worlds. I argue that, as a result of their counterfactual semantics, dispositionalists are in fact committed to entities that play the same theoretical role as possible worlds. Roughly, the claim is that (...) certain counterfactuals (ones that concern 'very large' states) force the dispositionalist to posit world-sized states that play the theoretical role of worlds. As a result, dispositionalists can (and perhaps should) make use of the mainstream framework (Kripke frames and the Lewis–Stalnaker counterfactual semantics) even if they ground all modal facts in dispositions. Стаття присвячена розгляду однієї зі станових для гайдеґґерового доробку проблем, предметом якої виступає іменування Буття під натиском універсалізованої Гайдеґґером ідеї про безосновність Буття, вкоріненої в феномені Ніщо. Радикалізуючи сказане: у статті розгортається проблема пошуку більш зрозумілого, самоочевидного та прозорого для Буття поняття, аніж самé буття, що обіймала наукові пошуки пізнього Гайдеґґера. Серед значного корпусу його робіт можна зустріти окреслений діапазон понять, якими він послуговувався як альтернативними у веденні мови про Буття. Варто підкреслити, що наразі йдеться не про уособлене в Dasein (...) буття сущого, а Буття з великої літери в сенсі вже узвичаєної в україномовному перекладі Прояви, тобто Ereignis. Проте, у статті затверджується думка, що воно аж ніяк не єдине з імен, нічим не опосередкованого Буття, окрім ототожнень останнього з тотальним Ніщо. Широкоформатність гайдеґґерових імен Буття розглянуто на прикладі найбільш вживаних ним понять, серед яких автор, окрім Ereignis, виокремлює насамперед грецьку істину-ἀλήθεια, а заразом супутні їм поняття ἐνέργεια, es gibt та copula. Побіжно прочиняється негативна проблематика кайрологічного та еонтологічного часів, що вкотре підтверджує закономірність обраного Гайдеґґером феномену часу нарівні з Буттям у своїй magnum opus. Крім того, у статті не полишені увагою такі локальні гайдеґґерові поняття, як Abßgrund, Ungrund, Austrag, Verwüstung та Gründung, завдяки аналітиці яких, поміж інших, нігітологічний погляд Гайдеґґера на Буття набуває остаточної цілісності. Поняття нігітології було обрано автором задля окремої акцентуації на зверненні Гайдеґґера до історико-філософської традиції погляду на феномен Ніщо із усіма похідними від нього поняттями, які мають пряме відношення до негативної інтерпретації Буття. Незважаючи на те, що примітивізація феномену негативності в бік спрощених форм заперечення вже відбулась в історії філософії, як і розтрачування імені буття до Гайдеґґера, у статті особливо підкреслюється ідея про те, що сáме із визначення греками негативних тез у питанні про буття бере початок Західний тип мислення як такий, що перетворив об’єкт власного неспокою у вигляді фігури Ніщо на одне з центральних для онтології понять. Спільною рисою вищезазначених імен Буття є їхня суперлативність, що водночас спричиняє контрінтуїтивність висновків, до яких вони призводять. Власне, завдяки цьому підтверджується актуальність поточного дослідження в рамцях станової для усіх форм онтології проблеми: приведення Буття до поняття, враховуючи негативну тенденційність імен буття до самоприховування та присутності в них семантичних мотивів нестачі й надлишковості водночас. Відтак, аналітика імені буття у масштабах нігітології має супроводжуватись загальним демонтажем позитивно-укласичненого сенсу заявлених понять, і виключно за таких умов перехід до так званого нового початку, ініційованого Гайдеґґером, можна вважати таким, що остаточно відбувся. This paper investigates a particular philosophical puzzle via an examination of its status in the writings of Wittgenstein. The puzzle concerns negation and can take on three interrelated guises. The first puzzle is how not-p can so much as negate p at all – for if p is not the case, then nothing corresponds to p. The second puzzle is how not-p can so much as negate p at all when not-p rejects p not as false but as unintelligible – (...) for if p is unintelligible, then p is nothing but scratches and sounds and does not seem apt for negation. And the third puzzle is how “not” could be anything but hopelessly equivocal if it sometimes (per the first puzzle) requires, and sometimes (per the second puzzle) precludes the intelligibility of p. The paper investigates these three puzzles, their respective structures, and their relations to each other. The second puzzle is expounded as the centre of gravity, and in countering two objections to the threefold puzzle, a special predicament is expounded with regard to the second puzzle’s concern with unipolar propositions – propositions that do not admit of an intelligible negation. The text concludes by indicating the first steps that could potentially lead us out of the threefold puzzle. (shrink)
