  1. Reflexive Historical Sociology.Arpád Szakolczai - 1998 - European Journal of Social Theory 1 (2):209-227.
This paper attempts to reassess the standard sociological canon and sketch the outlines of a new approach by bringing together a series of thinkers whose works so far have remained disconnected. Introducing a distinction between classics and background figures who were crucial sources of inspiration, it shifts emphasis to the late, reflexive works of Durkheim and Weber. • Technics and (para)praxis: the Freudian dimensions of Lewis Mumford’s theories of technology.Gregory Morgan Swer - 2004 - History of the Human Sciences 17 (4):45-68.

The aim of this article is to draw attention to the breadth and importance of Mumford's philosophical outlook by exploring his critical appropriation of the theories of Marx and Jung which he employed to create a penetrating, visionary collection of works that offer us a powerful and timely insight into the ills besetting our current technological civilization. Mumford partially accepted Marx's matter–psyche dynamic but expanded it to include architecture, technology and urban planning. He surpassed the one-way process of Marxist historical-economic (...)

  • Rhetorical Strategies in the Presentation of Ethology and Comparative Psychology in Magazines after World War II.Donald A. Dewsbury - 1997 - Science in Context 10 (2):367-386.
The ArgumentEuropean ethology and North American comparative psychology have been the two most prominent approaches to the study of animal behavior through most of the twentieth century. In this paper I analyze sets of popular articles by ethologist Nikolaas Tinbergen and psychologist Frank Beach, in an effort to understand the contrasting rhetorical styles of the two. Among the numerous ways in which Tinbergen and Beach differed were with respect to expressing the joy of research, the kind of scientific approach adopted, (...)
