  • Technics and (para)praxis: the Freudian dimensions of Lewis Mumford’s theories of technology.Gregory Morgan Swer - 2004 - History of the Human Sciences 17 (4):45-68.
The purpose of this article is to establish that Lewis Mumford’s historical and philosophical writings were heavily influenced by the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud. It is argued that Freudian ideas and concepts played a foundational role in the construction of Mumford’s views on the nature and function of mind, culture and history, which in turn founded his views on the relationship between technology and society. Indeed, it is argued that a full understanding of Mumford’s technological writings cannot be achieved (...)

  • Ecologically Sustainable Rural Development and the Difficulty of Social Change.Brian Furze - 1992 - Environmental Values 1 (2):141-155.
This article explores the importance of environmental perception in the context of alternative agrarian social relations. Because environmental perception is socially constructed, the article is concerned with how those with an alternative agenda for agrarian practice attempt change, and the likely difficulties faced due to the structural requirements and effects of the dominant paradigm of development. It explores the need for a clear model of change, both in its outcomes and its change strategies, and the difficulties that may be faced. (...)

  • (1 other version)The value content of agricultural technologies and their effect on rural regions and farmers.Kenneth A. Dahlberg - 1989 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 2 (2):87-96.
The premise of this article is that technologies are not neutral in terms of their design objectives, their scale, and the fact that they reflect the physical and social environments in which they have developed. Specific agricultural technologies, the midwestern plow, the California tomato harvester, and various biotechnologies, are evaluated in these terms and shown to have generally predictable impacts upon rural regions and farmers. Finally, the article examines a series of major threats such as climate change that require the (...)

  • Utopian hermeneutics: Plato’s dialogues and the legacy of aporia.Nicholas Robert Silverman - unknown
This thesis examines the Platonic brand in utopian fiction. It looks at Plato's dialogues, H. G Wells' A Modern Utopia and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. The modern texts provide opportunities to observe the effects of ideas found in the dialogues, helping illustrate their implications for the Platonic utopia. Understanding the implications of Plato's textual criticism found in his dialogues is indispensable in understanding how his dialogues are to be understood and what may be understood to be his utopia. This (...)

  • Paradise, the Golden Age the Millennium and Utopia: A Note on the Differentation of Forms of the Ideal Society.Luc Racine - 1983 - Diogenes 31 (122):119-138.
What is the difference between the earthly paradise, the Golden Age and the ideal city? This question is most important for whoever is interested in the various ways human societies have had for imagining an ideal state of perfection or social harmony. If we are not to confuse such different systems of representation as mythical thought, millenarianism and Utopia, it is absolutely necessary that we do not reduce the descriptions of an earthly paradise and a Golden Age to simple precursors (...)

  • Italian Fascism and Utopia.Charles Burdett - 2003 - History of the Human Sciences 16 (1):93-108.
Considering a number of recent works on the ideology and culture of Fascism, the article explores how the concept of utopia, as formulated by different thinkers, can prove useful in attempting to unlock some of the mechanisms through which Fascism sought to manipulate the imagination and the aspirations of Italians. It focuses on the written accounts of writers and journalists who reported on the supposed achievements of the regime both in Italy and in the newly established colonies. It examines the (...)
