Gynaecological self-help, a well-known and historical feminist practice from the Second Wave movements which aims at embodying a radical alternative to traditional reproductive politics, is resurging today in France, Switzerland and Belgium. Drawing on empirical observations and interviews, this article questions the links between feminist memory of self-help, the shaping of nostalgia and the production of a political feminist ‘we’. Born at the end of the 1960s in the United States, feminist self-help travelled internationally and was appropriated differently depending on (...) national contexts. This ‘glorious’ history of self-help and, more importantly, its narrated memory, is central to contemporary European self-help activism, as observed in the three national contexts. Drawing on this insight, this article reveals the active memory-oriented emotional work of self-help activists. It examines the ways in which nostalgia for an imagined and lost past is actively and practically produced and encouraged in social movement practices, and highlights the specificity of the kind of collective feminist identity that it shapes and promotes in contemporary self-help politics. ABSTRACT This essay presents a historical epistemology of the nineteenth‐century controversy concerning a scientific hoax, the Cardiff giant. My focus is on the shifting meanings given to the giant, which were based on epistemologies derived from scientific authority, religious belief, and market relations. In 1869 a farmer in Cardiff, New York, claimed to have discovered the fossilized remains of a prehistoric, perhaps biblical, giant on his property. While some scientists stressed the need to cooperate with commercial showmen, enthusiasm for the (...) giant incited the ire of others, who sought to debunk it and the culture that sustained it. Drawing on local newspaper reports, memoirs, nineteenth‐century exposés, and publicity materials associated with the giant’s display, I link the episode to the history of popular and scientific observation. The giant was a particularly troubling spectacle because as an object of inquiry it blurred the modern boundaries separating nature, society, and religion. (shrink)

ZusammenfassungIn den 1970er Jahren eigneten sich feministische Aktivistinnen die Figur der Hexe in verschiedenen Kontexten und Konstruktionen an: als Symbol für Alterität, politischen Radikalismus oder politische Revolte, Repräsentation des verfolgten Opfers oder der alternativen Heilerin, die über subversives Körperwissen verfügt. Der Artikel untersucht diese Hexenkonstruktionen mit dem Fokus auf ihren Erfahrungsgrundlagen, wobei er sich auf Aneignungen in Westeuropa und insbesondere Westdeutschland in seinen transatlantischen Verflechtungen konzentriert. In einem ersten Abschnitt wird zunächst ein kurzer Überblick über exemplarische Hexendiskurse in den 1970er (...) Jahren in radikalfeministischen, gesundheitspolitischen und künstlerischen Milieus gegeben auf der Grundlage einer Auswertung repräsentativer westeuropäischen Zeitschriften und Gesundheitsliteratur. Der Artikel hebt die Vielfalt der Hexenbilder und ihre erkenntnistheoretischen Zusammenhänge hervor und argumentiert, dass, so unterschiedlich diese Ansätze auch erscheinen mögen, sie alle Differenzmuster konstruierten. Daran anschließend werden im zweiten Abschnitt alternative Praktiken der Wissensproduktion analysiert mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Gesundheitsratgebern und consciousness raising groups. Es wird gezeigt, wie Hexendiskurse einerseits die Wissensermächtigung der Bewegung ermöglichten, andererseits aber Teil einer komplexen Grenzarbeit innerhalb der Milieus waren, etwa in den Debatten über das Verhältnis von Erfahrungswissen und Theorie. Der letzte Abschnitt des Artikels erweitert das Bild und verweist darauf, wie eng und auf welche Weise Spiritualität mit dieser Grenzarbeit verbunden war. Es wird diskutiert, wie diese Milieus sich im Rahmen feministischer Epistemologien gegen und innerhalb etablierter Wissenskulturen konstituierten und damit weitere Grenzen innerhalb der Bewegung gezogen wurden. Insgesamt demonstriert der Artikel mit dieser Analyse der „Evidenz der Erfahrung“ (Scott) in exemplarischen Hexendiskursen, dass deren historische Relevanz zunächst in ihrem standpunktbildenden Charakter lag. Feminists witness legal worlds as they observe, document and share nothing less than the reproduction of life itself. The world of the abortion trail, where people and things move across borders to change life’s reproduction, has generated a rich variety of legal sources, figures and objects for feminist witnessing. In watching how feminist activists improvise with sources, figures and objects of legal consciousness on the abortion trail, this article seeks to contribute to critical understanding of a plurality of witnessing practice, (...) particularly as it emerges in diaspora space. Focusing on Murphy’s concept of immodest witnessing, with its attention to bodies, protocols and apparatuses as constituents of knowledge, the article thinks with the diasporic feminist performance group, Speaking of I.M.E.L.D.A., about how they used self-examination, collaboration and knowledge-sharing on the trail to repeal Ireland’s 8th Amendment. The article argues that their improvisation with legal consciousness of reproductive choice enacts ‘cheeky witnessing’. Cheeky witnessing has three dynamics as a method of observation. First, it is messy and irreverent in innovating with names to display the mixed genealogies of feminist knowledge. Second, cheeky witnessing generates novel subject-figures who make connections between different reproductive labourers as observers of the trail in diaspora space. Third, cheeky witnessing places funny objects, knickers in this instance, so as to join up particular public locations and make them more, if unevenly, comfortable for sexual and reproductive bodies. Cheeky witnessing shows us how committed and partial practices play a role in speaking across interests and experiences, in stretching the legal imagination and in sustaining the everyday grind of making a better world.
