  1. Psychoanalytic Theory: A Historical Reconstruction.Sebastian Gardner - 2012 - Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume 86 (1):41-60.
In this paper I sketch a reconstruction of the basic psychoanalytic conception of the mind in terms of two historical resources: the conception of the subject developed in post-Kantian idealism, and Spinoza's laws of the affects in Part Three of the Ethics. The former, I suggest, supplies the conceptual basis for the psychoanalytic notion of the unconscious, while the latter defines the type of psychological causality of psychoanalytic explanations. The imperfect fit between these two elements, I claim, is reflected in (...)

  • G. Stanley Hall on “Mystic or Borderline Phenomena”.Carlos S. Alvarado - 2014 - Journal of Scientific Exploration 28 (1).
    G. Stanley Hall (1844–1924) was one the most prominent of the early American psychologists and an outspoken skeptic about the existence of psychic phenomena. This article presents a reprint of one of his critiques on the topic, a little-known paper entitled “Mystic or Borderline Phenomena” published in 1909 in the Proceedings of the Southern California Teacher’s Association. Hall commented on some phenomena of physical mediumship, as well as on apparitions, telepathy, and mental healing. In his view all could be explained (...)

  • Psychotherapy in historical perspective.Sarah Marks - 2017 - History of the Human Sciences 30 (2):3-16.
This article will briefly explore some of the ways in which the past has been used as a means to talk about psychotherapy as a practice and as a profession, its impact on individuals and society, and the ethical debates at stake. It will show how, despite the multiple and competing claims about psychotherapy’s history and its meanings, historians themselves have, to a large degree, not attended to the intellectual and cultural development of many therapeutic approaches. This absence has the (...)

  • Ernst Platner e a história pragmática da alma.Luis Fellipe Garcia - 2020 - Doispontos 17 (1).

  • Psychoanalysis Beyond the End of Metaphysics: Thinking Towards the Post-Relational.Robin S. Brown - 2016 - New York: Routledge.
_Psychoanalysis Beyond the End of Metaphysics_ offers a new paradigm approach which advocates reengaging the importance of metaphysics in psychoanalytic theorizing. The emergence of the relational trend has witnessed a revitalizing influx of new ideas, reflecting a fundamental commitment to the principle of dialogue. However, the transition towards a more pluralistic discourse remains a work in progress, and those schools of thought not directly associated with the relational shift continue to play only a marginal role. In this book, Robin S. (...)
