  1. Reframing data ethics in research methods education: a pathway to critical data literacy.Javiera Atenas, Leo Havemann & Cristian Timmermann - 2023 - International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education 20:11.
This paper presents an ethical framework designed to support the development of critical data literacy for research methods courses and data training programmes in higher education. The framework we present draws upon our reviews of literature, course syllabi and existing frameworks on data ethics. For this research we reviewed 250 research methods syllabi from across the disciplines, as well as 80 syllabi from data science programmes to understand how or if data ethics was taught. We also reviewed 12 data ethics (...)

  • Ethics and Behavioural Theory: How Do Professionals Assess Their Mental Models?Frank Jan de Graaf - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 157 (4):933-947.
The role and ethics of professionals in business and economics have been questioned, especially after the financial crisis of 2008. Some suggest a reorientation using concepts such as craftsmanship. In this article, I will explore professional practices within the context of behavioural theory and business ethics. I suggest that scholars of behavioural theory need a strategy to deal with normative questions to meet their ambition of practical relevance. Evidence-based management, a recent behavioural approach, may assist business ethics scholars in understanding (...)

  • Between Multiple Identities and Values: Professionals’ Identity Conflicts in Ethically Charged Situations.Lara Carminati & YingFei Gao Héliot - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
This study explored identity conflict dynamics in interpersonal interactions in professionals facing ethically charged situations. Through semi-structured interviews, we conducted a qualitative study among doctors and nurses working for the English National Healthcare Service and analyzed the data with grounded theory approaches. Our findings reveal that identity conflict is triggered by three micro processes, namely cognitive and emotional perspective taking, as well as identifying with the other. In these processes, identity conflict is signaled by emotions and recognized as a clash (...)

  • Ethical Research in Business Ethics.Gazi Islam & Michelle Greenwood - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 182 (1):1-5.
In this editorial essay, we argue that business ethics research should be aware of the ethical implications of its own methodological choices, and that these implications include, but go beyond, mere compliance with standardized ethical norms. Methodological choices should be made specifically with reference to their effects on the world, both within and outside the academy. Awareness of these effects takes researchers beyond assuring ethics in their methods to more fully consider the ethics of their methods as knowledge practices that (...)

  • Ethical Risk Management Education in Engineering: A Systematic Review.Yoann Guntzburger, Thierry C. Pauchant & Philippe A. Tanguy - 2017 - Science and Engineering Ethics 23 (2):323-350.
Risk management is certainly one of the most important professional responsibilities of an engineer. As such, this activity needs to be combined with complex ethical reflections, and this requirement should therefore be explicitly integrated in engineering education. In this article, we analyse how this nexus between ethics and risk management is expressed in the engineering education research literature. It was done by reviewing 135 articles published between 1980 and March 1, 2016. These articles have been selected from 21 major journals (...)

  • Multilevel dynamics of moral identity conflict: professional and personal values in ethically-charged situations.YingFei Gao Héliot & Lara Carminati - 2023 - Ethics and Behavior 33 (1):37-54.
ABSTRACT Through an interdisciplinary literature review, this propositional paper explores the emergence and unfolding of professionals’ moral identity conflicts involving important but contrasting values. Building on the exemplary case of physicians’ professional-religious dilemmas in End-of-Life circumstances, we develop a multilevel model of professional-personal identity conflict dynamics in ethically-charged situations in which we integrate individual-level mechanisms with organizational-level boundary conditions, namely peer social support and ethical climate, in relation to psychological well-being. Our conceptual model contributes to the ethics, identity and human (...)
