  1. Shared decision making and advance care planning: a systematic literature review and novel decision-making model.Ana Rosca, Isabelle Karzig-Roduner, Jürgen Kasper, Niek Rogger, Daniel Drewniak & Tanja Krones - 2023 - BMC Medical Ethics 24 (1):1-11.
Background and Aims Shared decision making (SDM) and advance care planning (ACP) are important evidence and ethics based concepts that can be translated in communication tools to aid the treatment decision-making process. Although both have been recommended in the care of patients with risks of complications, they have not yet been described as two components of one single process. In this paper we aim to (1) assess how SDM and ACP is being applied, choosing patients with aortic stenosis with high (...)

  • Supported Decision Making With People at the Margins of Autonomy.Andrew Peterson, Jason Karlawish & Emily Largent - 2021 - American Journal of Bioethics 21 (11):4-18.
This article argues that supported decision making is ideal for people with dynamic cognitive and functional impairments that place them at the margins of autonomy. First, we argue that guardianship and similar surrogate decision-making frameworks may be inappropriate for people with dynamic impairments. Second, we provide a conceptual foundation for supported decision making for individuals with dynamic impairments, which integrates the social model of disability with relational accounts of autonomy. Third, we propose a three-step model that specifies the necessary conditions (...)

  • A reflection on ethical and methodological challenges of using separate interviews with adolescent-older carer dyads in rural South Africa.Dumile Gumede, Nothando B. Ngwenya, Stella Namukwaya, Sarah Bernays & Janet Seeley - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):47.
This article discusses our reflections on ethical and methodological challenges when conducting separate interviews with individuals in dyads in the uMkhanyakude district, South Africa. Our work is embedded in an ethnographic study exploring care relationships between adolescents and their older carers in the context of a large-donor funded HIV programme. We use these reflections to discuss some of the challenges and present possible management strategies that may be adopted in conducting dyadic health research in resource-poor settings. Drawing from the relational (...)

  • Autonomous decisions by couples in reproductive care.Amal Matar, Anna T. Höglund, Pär Segerdahl & Ulrik Kihlbom - 2020 - BMC Medical Ethics 21 (1):1-8.
BackgroundPreconception Expanded Carrier Screening (ECS) is a genetic test offered to a general population or to couples who have no known risk of recessive and X-linked genetic diseases and are interested in becoming parents. A test may screen for carrier status of several autosomal recessive diseases at one go. Such a program has been piloted in the Netherlands and may become a reality in more European countries in the future. The ethical rationale for such tests is that they enhance reproductive (...)

  • The role of caregivers in the clinical pathway of patients newly diagnosed with breast and prostate cancer: A study protocol.Clizia Cincidda, Serena Oliveri, Virginia Sanchini & Gabriella Pravettoni - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
BackgroundCaregivers may play a fundamental role in the clinical pathway of cancer patients. They provide emotional, informational, and functional support as well as practical assistance, and they might help mediate the interaction and communication with the oncologists when care options are discussed, or decisions are made. Little is known about the impact of dyadic dynamics on patient-doctor communication, patient's satisfaction, or adherence to the therapies. This study protocol aims to evaluate the efficacy of a psychological support intervention on patients-caregivers relationship (...)
