  1. Consenting to counter-normative sexual acts: Differential effects of consent on anger and disgust as a function of transgressor or consenter.Pascale Sophie Russell & Jared Piazza - 2015 - Cognition and Emotion 29 (4):634-653.
Anger and disgust may have distinct roles in sexual morality; here, we tested hypotheses regarding the distinct foci, appraisals, and motivations of anger and disgust within the context of sexual offenses. We conducted four experiments in which we manipulated whether mutual consent (Studies 1–3) or desire (Study 4) was present or absent within a counter-normative sexual act. We found that anger is focused on the injustice of non-consensual sexual acts, and the transgressor of the injustice (Studies 1 and 3). Furthermore, (...)

  • Harmful transgressions qua moral transgressions: A deflationary view.Paulo Sousa & Jared Piazza - 2014 - Thinking and Reasoning 20 (1):99-128.
One important issue in moral psychology concerns the proper characterisation of the folk understanding of the relationship between harmful transgressions and moral transgressions. Psychologist Elliot Turiel and associates have claimed with a broad range of supporting evidence that harmful transgressions are understood as transgressions that are authority independent and general in scope which, according to them, characterises these transgressions as moral transgressions. Recently many researchers questioned the position advocated by the Turiel tradition with some new evidence. We entered this debate (...)

  • I’m so angry I could help you: Moral outrage as a driver of victim compensation.Erik W. Thulin & Cristina Bicchieri - 2016 - Social Philosophy and Policy 32 (2):146-160.
:Recent behavioral economics studies have shown that third parties compensate players in Dictator, Ultimatum, and Trust games. However, there are almost no studies about what drives third parties to compensate victims in such games. It can be argued that compensation is a form of helping; and helping behavior, in a variety of forms, has been widely researched, especially with regard to motivators. Previous work on helping behavior has focused on empathic concern as a primary driver. In sharp contrast, anger is (...)
