A commonplace of modern logic is that traditional logic, because it accepted the supposedly mistaken inference from general to particular propositions, perceived as valid a good number of invalid inference patterns. Yet many people find the allegedly invalid inference patterns intuitively valid. Four arguments that might be used to justify modern logic's judgment fail to provide good reason to provide modern logic pride of place.
