  1. Edmund Husserl in Talcott Parsons: Analytical Realism and Phenomenology. [REVIEW]Mitsuhiro Tada - 2013 - Human Studies 36 (3):357-374.
This article aims at clarifying the philosophical (=phenomenological) implication of Talcott Parsons’s analytical realism. Generally, his theory is understood as being confrontational to phenomenology; however, in his first book, The Structure of Social Action, Parsons positively referred to Husserl’s Logical Investigations. They shared a sense of crisis: Husserl thought that there was no certain basis in modern science, and Parsons had the feeling that there was no common theory to establish sociology as a science. Thus, both of them criticized the (...)

  • The Methodological Implications of the Schutz-Parsons Debate.Christian Etzrodt - 2013 - Open Journal of Philosophy 3 (1):29-38.
The aim of this paper is an analysis of the different standpoints of Parsons and Schutz concerning Weber’s suggestion that sociological explanations have to include the subjective point of view of the actors, the Cartesian Dilemma that the actor’s consciousness is not accessible to the researcher, and the Kantian Problem that theories are necessary in order to interpret sensory data, but that there is no guarantee that these theories are true. The comparison of Schutz’s and Parsons’s positions shows that Parsons’s (...)

  • Understanding the Subjective Point of View: Methodological Implications of the Schutz-Parsons Debate.Wing-Chung Ho - 2008 - Human Studies 31 (4):383-397.
The bone of contention that divides Alfred Schutz and Talcott Parsons in their 1940–1941 debate is that Schutz acknowledges an ontological break between the commonsense and scientific worlds whereas Parsons only considers it “a matter of refinement.” Schutz’s ontological distancing that disconnects the “world of consociates” where social reality is directly experienced in face-to-face contacts, and the “world of contemporaries” where the Other is experienced in terms of “types” has been crucial to social scientists. Implicated in the break is that (...)

  • The problem of objectivism in the production of sociological knowledge: the correspondence of Alfred Schutz, Talcott Parsons and Harold Garfinkel.Daniela G. López - 2014 - Cinta de Moebio 51:171-191.
The epistemological problem of objectivism in the production of sociological knowledge confronts the researcher with the question of the risk involved in substituting social reality by the idealizations and abstractions created by science. Without a doubt, the subject seems intriguing and requires its thematization facing toward and appropriate foundation of sociological concepts. In order to address that problem, the article aims to recover, from a hermeneutic perspective, a phenomenologically inspired epistemology in the works of Alfred Schutz and Harold Garfinkel. To (...)
