This article discusses one kind of athlete instrumentalization by reinterpreting Kafka’s novella Metamorphosis, in which the main character, Gregor Samsa, may be seen as a victim of family exploitation. We suggest that this story can be taken as a metaphor in the context of sport—of a ‘tennis mom’ or a ‘football dad’, who comes to see their child in instrumental terms. In a highly competitive sporting environment, instrumentalization has a direct impact on the young athlete, whose sporting encounter is profoundly (...) altered by family pressure and exploitation, often leading to fear of losing, or of being perceived as not trying hard enough, which might trigger negative parental behaviour and eventually lead to a metamorphosis. Through the lens of Heideggerian phenomeno-logy, we consider the autobiographies of two elite tennis players, Jelena Dokic and Andre Agassi, in order to highlight the complexities and dynamics of this kind of instrumentalization.
