  1. The ethics of the special ranking for pregnancy in tennis.Cesar R. Torres & Francisco Javier Lopez Frías - 2019 - Journal of the Philosophy of Sport 47 (1):121-141.
ABSTRACTIn this paper, we provide a normative analysis of the Women’s Tennis Association revised policy on maternity leave, which is regulated by its special ranking rule. To do so, we first explore how the revised policy functions when probed in relation to the nature of competitive sport. Then, we examine the revised policy through the lens of the literature on maternity discrimination. We argue that, when compared to its previous formulation, the revised special ranking rule is morally defensible because it (...)

  • Some Supposedly New Sorts of Discrimination.James Somerville - 1987 - Journal of Applied Philosophy 4 (2):177-193.
ABSTRACT Whether reverse discrimination is justifiable cannot be determined, it is argued, until what is meant by ‘reverse discrimination’ has been. Recent talk of ‘reverse discrimination’ and ‘discrimination in favour of’ suggests that there are some new sorts of discrimination. • How to define: a tutorial.Sven Ove Hansson - 2006 - Princípios 13 (19):05-30.
Practical methods are introduced for the construction of definitions, both for philosophical purposes and for uses in other disciplines. The structural and contentual requirements on definitions are clarified. It is emphasized that the development of a definition should begin with careful choice of a primary definiendum, followed by the selection of appropriate variables for the definition. Two methods are proposed for the construction of the definiens, the case list method and the method of successive improvements. Four classes of concepts are (...)

  • Medical Priority-Setting in the Pandemics and the Ethics of Discrimination / Medizinische Priorisierung in Pandemien und der ethische Diskriminierungsbegriff.Annette Dufner - 2023 - Ethik in der Medizin 35 (3):389-407.
As we have all learned in recent years, a pandemic can produce shortages in intensive care units. In our jurisdiction, this has led to a ruling by the federal constitutional court, according to which the lawmaker has to provide better protection for persons with disabilities in the event of medical priority setting. From an ethical perspective, this task requires a choice among various competing accounts on what exactly it is that makes a case of discrimination morally problematic. In addition, these (...)
