  1. Realist evaluation and its role in the stages of explanatory research based on critical realism.Juan David Parra - 2023 - Journal of Critical Realism 22 (5):859-881.
This article advocates for the validity of Realist Evaluation (RE) as a manifestation of Critical Realism in evaluation research despite criticisms suggesting that the former disregards principles from Bhaskarian ontology. Specifically, I argue that critics overstate RE's philosophical actualism in their argument that its inclination towards technocratic knowledge impedes its scrutiny of stratified social systems. Notwithstanding its limitations in fully elucidating causal structural mechanisms in social inquiry, I argue that RE's research rationale can contribute to the stages of explanatory research (...)

  • Historical and Cultural Refractions in Recent Education Transitions: The Example of Former Socialist European Countries.Ivor Goodson & Rain Mikser - 2023 - British Journal of Educational Studies 71 (1):99-116.
Thirty years after the demise of the Soviet bloc, there still persists a rhetoric of differentiation and a discursive polarisation between the Western and the non-Western educational thinking and practices. This rhetoric overshadows a potential similarity, or homogeneity, between the dominant and several marginalised contexts. Regional, local and personal variations are prematurely attributed to fundamental, if often poorly argued, cultural differences. We seek to introduce and to preliminarily summarise the existing understandings of refraction in education and social research. Sporadically used (...)

  • Bringing critical realism to nursing practice: Roy Bhaskar's contribution.Lynne Williams, Jo Rycroft-Malone & Christopher R. Burton - 2017 - Nursing Philosophy 18 (2):e12130.
In the context of modern nursing practice that is embedded within complex social situations, critical discussions about the contribution of major philosophers are relevant and important. Whilst nurse theorists have advanced and shaped nursing as a discipline, other major philosophers can offer much to advance nursing enquiry. In this paper, we focus on philosopher Roy Bhaskar who, amongst others, developed critical realism, a philosophy for social science which connects with how many of us think about the world. Bhaskar's work focuses (...)

  • The contribution of Ahlussunnah Waljamaah’s theology in establishing moderate Islam in Indonesia.Imam Kanafi, Harapandi Dahri, Susminingsih Susminingsih & Syamsul Bakhri - 2021 - HTS Theological Studies 77 (4):1-10.
Radicalism and Islamic phobia have the potential to cause conflict amongst religious communities so that it needs social movements in building religious moderation. This study aims to understand and analyse the Ahlussunnah Waljamaah theology in the six largest Islamic community organisations in Indonesia in implementing religious moderation. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data obtained from interviews, observations and in-depth interviews regarding the process of externalising, objectifying and internalising the theology of Ahlusunnah Waljamaah in Nahdlatul Ulama, (...)
