  1. On Reason and Spectral Machines: Robert Brandom and Bounded Posthumanism.David Roden - 2017 - In Rosi Braidotti & Rick Dolphijn (eds.), Philosophy After Nature. Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield International. pp. 99-119.
I distinguish two theses regarding technological successors to current humans (posthumans): an anthropologically bounded posthumanism (ABP) and an anthropologically unbounded posthumanism (AUP). ABP proposes transcendental conditions on agency that can be held to constrain the scope for “weirdness” in the space of possible posthumans a priori. AUP, by contrast, leaves the nature of posthuman agency to be settled empirically (or technologically). Given AUP there are no “future proof” constraints on the strangeness of posthuman agents. -/- In Posthuman Life I defended (...)

  • Sexuality in a context of speculative posthumanism: Human-posthuman ruptures and disconnections.Nataliia V. Zahurska - 2019 - Вісник Харківського Національного Університету Імені В. Н. Каразіна. Серія «Філософія. Філософські Перипетії» 60:6-12.
In this article human-posthuman ruptures and disconnections both in comprehension and in practices, as well as the possibility of epistemological contingency contemporaneously are investigated. This means that an epistemological ruptures and an ontological disconnections of sexuality both differ from one another, and also join together. Since ancient times both sensitive and sensible practices of sexuality were considered the best mode to concern to sexual care of self. It has shown that, in relation to sexuality, a correlation of epistemological discontinuity and (...)

  • (1 other version)Posthuman Life: The Galapagos Objection.David Roden - manuscript
In my book Posthuman Life: Philosophy at the Edge of the Human (Routledge 2014) I set out a recursive account of the conditions for posthumanity: the Disconnection Thesis (DT). The DT states that a being is posthuman iff: -/- 1) It has ceased to belong to WH (the "Wide Human" socio-technical network) as a result of technical alteration; 2) Or it is a wide descendent of such a being (outside WH) (PHL 112) -/- Jon Cogburn's "Galapagos objection" attempts to show (...)

  • Empathy and Alteration: The Ethical Relevance of a Phenomenological Species Concept.Darian Meacham - 2014 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 39 (5):543-564.
The debate over the ethics of radically, technologically altering the capacities and traditional form of the human body is rife with appeals to and dismissals of the importance of the integrity of the human species. Species-integrist arguments can be found in authors as varied as Annas, Fukuyama, Habermas, and Agar. However, the ethical salience of species integrity is widely contested by authors such as Buchanan, Daniels, Fenton, and Juengst. This article proposes a Phenomenological approach to the question of species-integrity, arguing (...)
