  • Crisis of political parties and representative democracies: rethinking parties in associational, experimentalist governance.Veit Bader - 2014 - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy 17 (3):350-376.
The contrast between the normative functions of political parties in representative democracies and their empirical working is stark and rapidly increasing. This article starts from a sober, realist account of the empirical state of affairs and from structural problems of democracy and participations – in terms of limits of time, information, qualification and relevant expertise – that have to be acknowledged by any realist–utopian proposal of alternatives beyond the exclusive alternative of ‘thin, realist democracy’ or emphatic ‘strong, participatory, direct, or (...)

  • Uncertainty and Participatory Democracy.Luigi Pellizzoni - 2003 - Environmental Values 12 (2):195-224.
The article deals with some implications of radical uncertainty for participatory democracy, and more precisely for Participatory Technology Assessment. Two main forms of PTA are discussed. One is aimed at involving lay citizens and highlighting public opinion. The other is addressed to stakeholder groups and organisations, not only in terms of interest mediation but also of inclusion of their insight into a problem. Radical uncertainty makes 'intractable' many environmental and technological issues and brings into question traditional and new approaches to (...)

  • Strengthening Labor Standards Enforcement through Partnerships with Workers’ Organizations.Jennifer Gordon & Janice Fine - 2010 - Politics and Society 38 (4):552-585.
Structures of employment in low-wage industries, a diminished wage and hour inspectorate, and an unworkable immigration regime have combined to create an environment where violations of basic workplace laws are everyday occurrences. This article identifies four “logics” of detection and enforcement, arguing that there is a mismatch between the enforcement strategies of most federal and state labor inspectorates and the industries in which noncompliance continues to be a problem. In response, the authors propose augmenting labor inspectorates by giving public interest (...)

  • When the Forum Meets Interest Politics: Strategic Uses of Public Deliberation.Carolyn M. Hendriks - 2006 - Politics and Society 34 (4):571-602.
This article explores the interface between public deliberation and interest politics. It empirically examines how and when actors with vested interests support and oppose processes of direct citizen deliberation, such as citizens’ juries. An analysis of four cases finds that interest groups and activists respond to citizen deliberation in a variety of ways from cooperative engagement to disruptive disengagement. The research suggests that partisan actors are most likely to support citizens’ forums when the ideational and political context offers instrumental reasons (...)

  • (1 other version)‘Spaces of Freedom’: Materiality, Mediation and Direct Political Participation in the Work of Arendt and Sartre.Sonia Kruks - 2006 - Contemporary Political Theory 5 (4):469.
In the light of a renewed interest today in forms of direct political participation, this paper explores the contributions of Sartre and Arendt to defending direct political action as an intrinsically valuable form of human freedom. Both thinkers note, however, that such forms of action and the 'spaces of freedom' in which they become possible are always fleeting and transitory. The paper argues that Sartre's account of the ways in which human action is always mediated and alienated by materiality is (...)

  • Justification and legitimacy in global civil society.Graham Long - 2008 - Journal of Global Ethics 4 (1):51 – 66.
As some thinkers have sought in the concept of global civil society an ethically driven site of deliberation and even resistance, so others have criticized global civil society for its lack of legitimacy and representativeness. This article attempts to answer these criticisms ? at least in part ? by invoking a moral commitment to the value of justification. I argue that the idea of justification, when examined, offers us a particular understanding of legitimacy which would be attainable for global civil (...)

  • Associative Democracy: From ‘the real third way’ back to utopianism or towards a colourful socialism for the 21st century?Veit Bader - 2021 - Thesis Eleven 167 (1):12-41.
Associative Democracy has been developed as a specific response to statist socialism and neoliberal capitalism, drawing on older traditions such as associationalism, democratic socialism, and cooperative socialism. As the ‘real third way’, it is distinct from neoliberal privatization and deregulation in the Blair–Schröder varieties of social democracy and in the conservative Reagan–Thatcher–Cameron varieties. This article summarizes what seemed to make AD an attractive realist utopia: its combination of economic, societal and political democracy; its focus on democratic institutional pluralism in all (...)
