    Chicana feminist writers have written eloquently about the condition of women in their communities. Many of them have aligned themselves with and participated in various political movements. This practice has infused their theorizing with various influences which makes them similar to other feminist theorists but also different.     This paper argues that most conceptualizations of citizenship limit the purview of the discourse to static categories. ‘Citizenship’ is commonly seen as an ideal type, presuming a largely legal relationship between an inidividual and a single nation-state – more precisely only one type of nation-state, the advanced capitalist post-war model.     Inspired by Hill's work on the uses of Spanish among Anglo-Americans, this article exposes ‘Household Spanish’ as a discursive site for the reproduction of racism and social order. Also called ‘domestic’ discourse, this use of Spanish consists largely of one-way directives given by native English-speaking, middle-to-upper class homeowners who intend to ‘communicate’ with their Spanish-speaking housekeepers and gardeners.     The “Home” is ideologically understood as a place of safety and refuge. Such an account cloaks violence against women. The voices of battered women can disrupt that dominant construction of the space of the home, a construction typified by the work of Gaston Bachelard. The space that Bachelard presupposes and theorizes as given is in fact being-produced, cleaned, and organized by people who themselves may not find in it any solace or respite.

    Are social movements responsible for their unfinished agendas? Feminist successes in opening the professions to women paved the way for the emergence of the upper middle-class two-career household. These households sometimes hire domestic servants to accomplish their child care work. If, as I shall argue, this practice is unjust and furthers social inequality, then it poses a moral problem for any feminist commitment to social justice.

  • Is It Wrong To Pay For Housework?Gabrielle Meagher - 2002 - Hypatia 17 (2):52-66.
    This paper assesses arguments that paying for housework compromises the moral integrity of either the buyer or seller or both. I find that none provides adequate justification for avoiding paying for housework. Instead, I argue that the vigorous pursuit of justice for women workers will best remedy injustice in service sector occupations, including paid housework.

  • Mothering for the State: Foster Parenting and the Challenges of Government-Contracted Carework.Teresa Toguchi Swartz - 2004 - Gender and Society 18 (5):567-587.
    This article draws on ethnographic research with a nonprofit foster family agency to examine how payment affects caregivers’motivations and performance, as well as how state bureaucratic organization and professional supervision affect their carework. Findings suggest that contrary to conventional thought, economic interests and altruistic motives coexist for foster mothers.
