  1. How Does Social Support Affect the Retention Willingness of Cross-Border E-Commerce Sellers?Huiyun Shen, Jie Yu, Hua Zhang, Jin Gou & Xiangqian Zhang - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
E-commerce research usually focuses more on how to protect consumers’ rights and increase their purchase intention from the perspective of consumers. However, we still lack understanding of e-commerce sellers, especially cross-border e-commerce sellers. Based on the stimulus-body-response theory, this paper built a moderated mediation model to test the relationships among social support, perceived benefits, perceived usefulness and sellers’ willingness to retain. The results show that social support has a positive impact on perceived benefits and sellers’ willingness to retain; perceived benefits (...)

  • The relationships among consumers’ ethical ideology, risk aversion and ethically-based distrust of online retailers and the moderating role of consumers’ need for personal interaction.Isabel P. Riquelme & Sergio Román - 2014 - Ethics and Information Technology 16 (2):135-155.
Consumer distrust is only recently beginning to be perceived as an important e-commerce issue and, unlike online trust, the nature and role of distrust is much less established. This study examines the influence of two important consumer characteristics on consumer’s ethically-based distrust of online retailers. Also, the moderating role of consumer’s need for personal contact with sales staff is tested. Results from 409 online consumers confirm that both relativist-based ethical ideology and risk aversion are strongly and positively related to consumers’ (...)

  • The Role of Ethical Perceptions in Consumers’ Participation and Value Co-creation on Sharing Economy Platforms.Waqar Nadeem, Mari Juntunen, Nick Hajli & Mina Tajvidi - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 169 (3):421-441.
Consumers’ participation on sharing economy platforms is crucial for the success of the products, services, and companies on those platforms. The participation of consumers enables companies to not only exist, but also to create value for consumers. The sharing economy has witnessed enormous growth in recent years and consumers’ concerns regarding the ethics surrounding these platforms have also risen considerably. The vast majority of the previous research on this topic is either conceptual and focused on organizational aspects, or only discusses (...)

  • The Influence of Consumers’ Cognitive and Psychographic Traits on Perceived Deception: A Comparison Between Online and Offline Retailing Contexts.Isabel P. Riquelme & Sergio Román - 2014 - Journal of Business Ethics 119 (3):405-422.
In this article, we examine the role of several consumers’ cognitive and psychographic traits in their perceptions of retailers’ deceptive practices and the different effects on perceived deception associated with online vis-à-vis in-store shopping. Building on theoretical models of persuasion in consumer behavior, we hypothesize that the antecedents of perceived deception in traditional settings are the same as those on the Internet, while the intensity of the impact of these antecedents differs between the online and the offline environment. Results suggest (...)

  • Lies in the Sky: Effects of Employee Dishonesty on Organizational Reputation in the Airline Industry.Karen A. Jehn & Elizabeth D. Scott - 2015 - Business and Society Review 120 (1):115-136.
Conventional wisdom suggests that dishonesty on the part of an organization's employees has a negative effect on the organization's reputation. However, many organizations condone (or even require) dishonesty under certain circumstances. In this research of 128 airline passengers, we examine situations in which employees are perceived to be dishonest within one such industry, the international airlines, and examine the impact of this dishonesty on organizational reputation and customer satisfaction. We found that the reputation of the firm was most damaged when (...)

  • Confucian Dynamism, the Role of Money and Consumer Ethical Beliefs: An Exploratory Study in Taiwan.Long-Chuan Lu, Ya-Wen Huang & Hsiu-Hua Chang - 2014 - Ethics and Behavior 24 (1):34-52.
Consumer ethics is the moral principles and standards that guide consumers to determine the certain consumption behaviors are ethically right or wrong. Whereas cultural and personal dimensions are crucial constructs affecting individual ethical attitudes and behaviors, few studies consider Confucian dynamism and the role of money in consumer ethics. Confucian dynamism, a cultural dimension based on Confucianism, has played a central role in guiding moral obligations and ethics in human relations in several East Asian countries. Thus, this study tested its (...)

  • A tangled web: views of deception from the customer's perspective.Erin Adamson Gillespie, Katie Hybnerova, Carol Esmark & Stephanie M. Noble - 2014 - Business Ethics: A European Review 25 (2):198-216.
While there has been extensive research on deception, extant literature has not examined how deception is processed solely from the customer's perspective. Extensive qualitative interviews were conducted and analyzed to inform the proposed framework. Cognitive dissonance theory and attribution theory are used to frame the process consumers go through when deception is perceived. When consumers perceive deceit, they will consider attribution before determining intentionality. Internal attributions relieve the company of wrongdoing to some extent, whereas external attributions lead consumers to examine (...)
