Should animal farmers be paid compensation for their loss of property when transitioning to a vegan economy? To answer this question, the following article compares the transition away from a carnist economy with the compensation paid when abolishing (human) slavery in the 19th century. Three arguments are considered to justify the direct compensation of lost human/animal property. This article argues that all three accounts lack the grounds to authorize compensation as just. Instead, an alternative principle is proposed that justifies supporting (...) anyone made vulnerable during economic transitions, encompassing a wider group of individuals than former proprietors alone.
