  1. Predicting syntactic choice in Mandarin Chinese: a corpus-based analysis of ba sentences and SVO sentences.Haitao Liu & Yu Fang - 2021 - Cognitive Linguistics 32 (2):219-250.
This paper investigates the effects of 10 factors on the choice between alternative ba sentences and SVO sentences in Mandarin Chinese. These factors are givenness, definiteness, animacy and pronominality of NP2s, NP2 length, VP length, verb sense, syntactic parallelism, dependency distance, and surprisal. Using corpus data and mixed-effects logistic regression modeling, we find that on the one hand, givenness, syntactic parallelism, and the log-transformed ratio of NP2 length and VP length are significant predictors of the choice between ba sentences and (...)

  • Assessing the complexity of lectal competence: the register-specificity of the dative alternation after give.Benedikt Szmrecsanyi, Laura Rosseel, Jason Grafmiller & Alexandra Engel - 2022 - Cognitive Linguistics 33 (4):727-766.
Recent evidence suggests that probabilistic grammars may be modulated by communication mode and genre. Accordingly, the question arises how complex language users’ lectal competence is, where complexity is proportional to the extent to which choice-making processes depend on the situation of language use. Do probabilistic constraints vary when we talk to a friend compared to when we give a speech? Are differences between spoken and written language larger than those within each mode? In the present study, we aim to approach (...)

  • Generalizability in mixed models: Lessons from corpus linguistics.Freek Van de Velde, Stefano De Pascale & Dirk Speelman - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45.
Part of the generalizability issues that haunt controlled lab experiment designs in psychology, and more particularly in psycholinguistics, can be alleviated by adopting corpus linguistic methods. These work with natural data. This advantage comes at a cost: in corpus studies, lexemes and language users can show different kinds of skew. We discuss a number of solutions to bolster the control.
