  • “Real” and imaginary worlds in children’s fiction: The Velveteen Rabbit.Christian M. I. M. Matthiessen & Francisco O. D. Veloso - 2023 - Semiotica 2023 (251):161-191.
Literature for children is often designed to stimulate imagination through variants of the “real” world that we inhabit, expanding their potential for construing different possible worlds – variants that include imaginary characters like animals with human traits or toys that are somehow animated and conscious. Here we will examine one version of Margery William’s classic nursery tale The Velveteen Rabbit, or How Toys Become Real, where the theme of “real” and imaginary characters and worlds is construed both linguistically and pictorially. • Competition among visual, verbal, and auditory modalities: a socio-semiotic perspective.Nana Zhou - 2024 - Semiotica 2024 (259):127-147.
This article presents a fresh perspective on the interplay among visual, verbal, and auditory modalities, positing that these modalities, as semogenic resources, compete to express dynamic meanings. The theoretical paradigm emphasizes that whether a modality or an element within a modality gets or loses semantic status, it will elicit an additional layer of social meaning to depict a comprehensive picture of a story together with an explicit semiotic meaning. The article adopts a qualitative method to analyze the data, which are (...)

  • Intersemiotic projection and academic comics: towards a social semiotic framework of multimodal paratactic and hypotactic projection.Xinyu Zhu & Lei Zeng - 2022 - Semiotica 2022 (247):227-254.
Intersemiotic projection is one of the most common configurations in the knowledge construction process of academic comics. Although previous studies address some general features of intersemiotic projection, further research on interdependency relations of intersemiotic projection is needed in order to map out the whole system. This study, based on the social-semiotic approach to multimodal studies, proposes a systemic framework of image-text paratactic and hypotactic projection in academic comics. This framework identifies three sub-categories of paratactic projection and hypotactic projection, respectively: Emergent, (...)
