Traditionally animal ethics has criticised the anthropocentric worldview according to which humans differ categorically from the rest of the nature in some morally relevant way. It has claimed that even though there are differences, there are also crucial similarities between humans and animals that make it impossible to draw a categorical distinction between humans who are morally valuable and animals which are not. This argument, according to which animals and humans share common characteristics that lead to moral value, is at (...) the heart of animal ethics. Lately the emphasis on similarity has been under attack. It has been claimed that the search for similarity is itself part of anthropocentric morality, since only those like us are valuable. It also has been claimed that true respect for animals comes from recognising their difference and ‘otherness’, not from seeing similarities. This paper analyses the new ‘other animal ethics’ by critically examining its basis and consequences. The conclusion is that despite the fact that other animal ethics is right in demanding respect also for difference, it remains both vague and contradictory in its theoretical basis, and leads to undesirable consequences from the perspective of animal welfare. 환경 윤리 논의의 핵심은 환경보호라는 설정된 가치를 어떻게 실현시키는가에 달려 있다. 그렇다면 환경 덕 윤리가 환경 보호라는 설정된 가치를 실현시키는 방법에 대한 탁월한 지침을 제공할 수 있다. 환경을 보호하기 위해서는 환경을 윤리적 고려의 대상으로 바라볼 수 있어야 하는데, 환경 행위 윤리는 이러한 점에서 어려움에 봉착한다는 것을 해명할 것이다. 환경 행위 윤리는 환경을 윤리적 대상으로 파악하지 못한다는 점이 환경 행위 윤리를 거부하는 결정적 이유가 되고 있다. 환경 행위 윤리에서환경 덕 윤리로 방향을 전환해야 한다고 주장하면서, 환경 덕 윤리가 필수적인 근거를 환경 파괴에 (...) 대해 우리가 느끼는 불편한 감정을 통해 설명하였다. 환경 행위 윤리 이론은 환경 파괴에 대한 불편한 감정을 설명할 수 없으며, 이러한 이유로 환경을 윤리적 대상으로 설정하지 못하거나 적어도 큰 어려움을 겪는다는 것을 논의할 것이다. 그리고 환경적 덕이 어떻게 가능한지에 관한 여러 입장을 제시할 것이다. 이러한 논의를 통해 환경 덕 윤리가 가능하며, 환경 윤리에서 중추적 위치를 갖는다는 것이 자연스럽게 드러날 것이다.
