  1. This time it’s personal: reappraisal after acquired brain injury.Leanne Rowlands, Rudi Coetzer & Oliver Turnbull - 2021 - Cognition and Emotion 35 (2):305-323.
Reappraisal is a widely investigated emotion regulation strategy, often impaired in those with acquired brain injury (ABI). Little is known, however, about the tools to measure this capacity in patients, who may find traditional reappraisal tasks difficult. Fifty-five participants with ABI, and thirty-five healthy controls (HCs), completed reappraisal tasks with personal and impersonal emotion elicitation components, questionnaires measuring reappraisal (the ERQ-CA), and neuropsychological assessment. The main findings demonstrated that both groups produced more reappraisals, and rated their reappraisal ideas as more (...)

  • Successful implementation of cognitive reappraisal: effects of habit and situational factors.Or Cohen Ben Simon, Lior Ron & Shimrit Daches - 2022 - Cognition and Emotion 36 (8):1605-1612.
Reappraisal is an adaptive emotion regulation strategy associated with favourable mental health outcomes. It is unclear whether the adaptive outcomes of habitual reappraisal are associated with better implementation of reappraisal when faced with negative affective situations. The current study aimed to examine whether habitual reappraisal predicts the implementation of instructed reappraisal and to evaluate the potential moderating effects of situational factors, namely – emotional intensity and reappraisal affordance. To address this question, 100 participants reported their habitual reappraisal tendency and were (...)

The extended process model of emotion regulation posits that dynamic ER processes monitor and adjust the implementation of ER strategies over time. When an initial ER strategy is ineffective,...

  • Emotion regulation choice in an evaluative context: the moderating role of self-esteem.Roni Shafir, Tara Guarino, Ihno A. Lee & Gal Sheppes - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 31 (8):1725-1732.
Evaluative contexts can be stressful, but relatively little is known about how different individuals who vary in responses to self-evaluation make emotion regulatory choices to cope in these situations. To address this gap, participants who vary in self-esteem gave an impromptu speech, rated how they perceived they had performed on multiple evaluative dimensions, and subsequently chose between disengaging attention from emotional processing and engaging with emotional processing via changing its meaning, while waiting to receive feedback regarding these evaluative dimensions. According (...)
