This article summarizes how I came to deal with the subject matter of action, the main claims that I have defended, the prospects for future research, the interdisciplinary collaborations that are needed, and the obstacles to be surmounted.

There are many ways in which a musical performance can be “bad,” but here the focus is on two: those performances that make you laugh, and those that make you angry. These forms of musical badness, however, are not primarily compositional deficits, but either (a) that the performer simply cannot competently deliver the music to their audience, inducing laughter, or (b) that the performer exhibits some form of disrespect, provoking anger. Such laughter or anger stems from failure of the expected (...) relationship between a performer and their audience, that is, a social failure. After surveying a range of musical faults, the article examines the causes of laughter in general and in relation to some of examples of risible “bad” music. Similarly, the causes of social and moral anger in general are examined, and several cases of anger-inducing musical performances are presented. The article concludes with a consideration of the broader implications of these responses to “bad” music for theories of emotional expression in music, the relationship between aesthetic and moral judgments, and the centrality of musical performances as opposed to works in discussions of musical expression and value. Brojni čimbenici koji utječu na oblikovanje glazbenih preferencija srednjoškolaca upućuju na zahtjevnu ulogu glazbenih pedagoga. Njihov je zadatak da kompetentnim i kreativnim glazbenim poučavanjem navedu učenike da s emocionalno konotacijskog pristupa započnu primjenjivati sintaktičku strategiju slušanja, s razvijenim analitičkim muzikološkim procesima, te postupno razviju glazbeni ukus s kvalitetnim estetskim sustavom vrijednosti. Istražujući odnos sociodemografskih varijabli i glazbenih preferencija učenika prvih i četvrtih razreda gimnazije i strukovne srednje škole potvrđene su razlike u poznavanju i preferencijama utvrđenih glazbenih stilova s obzirom na (...) spol, vrstu škole, dob i školski uspjeh. Kroz dobivene rezultate istraživanja aktualizirana je potreba za uvrštavanjem glazbene poduke u strukovnim školama, obrazovnim institucijama u kojima takvi sadržaji nisu zastupljeni, ali i potreba za programskim proširenjima kako bi mladi u svojoj formativnoj fazi uz izgradnju pozitivnog odnosa prema umjetničkoj glazbi razvijali i otvorenost te toleranciju prema različitim kulturama i supkulturnim fenomenima. The numerous factors affecting secondary school students’ musical preferences show how difficult the role of music educators is. Their task is to use competent, creative music teaching to lead students away from an emotional, connotative approach towards a syntactic strategy of listening, to develop analytical musicological processes, and to gradually develop their musical tastes with a highquality aesthetic value system. Research into the relationship between socio-demographic variables and musical preferences among students in year 1 and year 4 of gymnasiums and vocational schools has affirmed differences in knowledge of and preferences in attested musical styles according to sex, type of school, age, and academic performance. The results of this research indicate the need to include music instruction in vocational schools, educational institutions that lack music programmes, as well as the need to increase the breadth of existing music programmes so that young people in their formative years, in addition to building a positive relationship towards artistic music, develop openness and tolerance towards various cultures and subcultural phenomena. There are substantial numbers of frozen embryos in storage that will not be used by those who produced them for their own fertility treatment. One option for such embryos is to donate them to others to use in their fertility treatment. There has been considerable debate about how this process should be organized. In the US, there are embryo adoption programmes that mediate between those relinquishing embryos and potential recipients. This is a form of conditional embryo donation, where the relinquishing (...) couple can choose the recipient of their embryo. This article examines the ethical debate over conditional embryo donation for family building and explores the question of whether those who have unused frozen embryos should be able to determine who receives their embryos. The main objections to conditional embryo donation are examined: first, the embryo is not a person and therefore such concern over the placement of an embryo is unwarranted; secondly, potential donors might impose morally problematic conditions on who should receive their embryo; and thirdly, there are practical difficulties regarding organizational arrangements and the associated costs involved. It will be concluded that these objections can be countered and that if people wish to donate and receive embryos in this way there is no ethical objection to them doing so. (shrink)

: The paper discusses the contribution that the neuroscience of action can offer to the legal understanding of action control and responsibility in the case of adult individuals. In particular, we address the issues that follow. What are the cognitive capacities that agents must display in order to be held liable to punishment in criminal law? Is the legal model of liability to punishment compatible with a scientifically informed understanding of voluntary behaviour? To what extent should the law take into (...) account people’s subjective feelings about their own actions? As a result of our analyses, we indicate some areas where the contribution of the neuroscience of action to the law is potentially relevant. We focus on the subjectivity mechanisms of action control, specifically the requirement that the agent must violate the law voluntarily in order to be held responsible, and on the factors that modulate the wrongdoer’s experience of agency. Overall, we advocate more cross-disciplinary work, aimed to bridge the gap between conceptual boundaries, on the theme of responsibility for actions. La componente di controllo dell’imputabilità penale Riassunto : L’articolo discute il contributo che la neuroscienza dell’azione può offrire ai temi del controllo dell’azione e della responsabilità in ambito legale, nel caso degli individui adulti. In particolare, ci occuperemo delle questioni che seguono. Quali sono le abilità cognitive che un agente deve possedere per esser considerato penalmente responsabile e quindi punibile? Il modello legalistico della responsabilità è compatibile con il modello scientifico-naturalistico del comportamento umano? Fino a che punto variazioni nel senso di controllo soggettivo sulle azioni dovrebbero essere considerate un parametro rilevante in sede penale? Sulla scorta della nostra analisi, indicheremo alcune aree nelle quali il contributo della neuroscienza dell’azione a questioni legate al tema della responsabilità legale potrebbe rivelarsi rilevante. L’articolo si concentra sui meccanismi che regolano il senso soggettivo di controllo dell’azione – in particolare il requisito secondo il quale l’agente deve violare la legge volontariamente per essere ritenuto responsabile –, e sui fattori che modulano il senso di agentività del colpevole. In conclusione, difenderemo l’appropriatezza di una più ampia riflessione multi-disciplinare volta a ridurre le incompatibilità fra differenti approcci al tema della responsabilità per le nostre azioni.
