The article distinguishes two models of self-realization. The independence model claims that self-realization is compatible with leading a non-moral life, whereas the dependence model argues the converse. Hegel′s influential version of the dependence model aims at showing why and how self-realization must be embedded in a complex structure of reasonable social relations. I argue that Hegel′s dependence model abrogates the „Recht der Besonderheit, sich befriedigt zu finden” and is thus not convincing. What I call Hegel′s “inofficial theory”, however, concedes an (...) infusible conflict between modernity and self-realization; philosophy has to reconcile the individual with the impossibility of being a „ganzer Mensch” in modern societies. After an interlude with Michael Theunissen′s indpendence model, I turn to T. H. Green′s theory of self-realization. Green provides a richer explanatory story than Hegel as to why other-regarding acts contribute to self-realization; however, this story leaves not enough conceptual room for interpersonal conflict and is vulnerable to similar objections to Hegel′s account. Demnach hat jeder Mensch das Recht, selbst darüber zu entscheiden, wie er leben möchte, und seine persönlichen Entscheide in der eigenen Lebensführung zu realisieren - und das ohne die Einmischung von anderen, auch staatlichen Stellen. Doch Selbstbestimmung ist nicht grenzenlos. Sie hat auch Rücksicht auf andere zu nehmen, deren Rechte zu achten und ist immer mit Verantwortung verbunden. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes stellen sich diesem Spannungsfeld und fragen: Was heißt es (...) unter diesen Vorzeichen, sich selbst zu bestimmen und ein gelungenes Leben zu führen? Und was bedeutet Autonomie für Entscheide am Lebensende und die personalisierte Medizin? (shrink)

The hermeneutics of facticity, which constituted a part of the prehistory of Heidegger’s thinking before Being and Time, has itself also a prehistory, which is manifest in the investigation of the early Freiburg lectures. The central question here is how the non-theoretical access to the factual life and its movement is possible. Accordingly, Heidegger develops three conceptions one after another in his lectures: The original science of factual life in and of itself, the categorial explication of factual life and finally (...) the hermeneutics of facticity. These conceptions are examined from a thematic and a methodological perspective in order to bring to light the development of Heidegger’s thought in his early Freiburg lectures, which finally ends in the hermeneutics of facticity.
